Benfica vs. Milan

Champions League Match Day 5

Wednesday 28th November 2007

Time: 19.45 (UK Time) 20.45 (Italian Time)

Posted by: mishie Nov 25 2007, 06:10 PM

after watching Benfica last night not to many worries here...but they way we played today yo u just never know....but i'm going with a 1-2 win and qualification biggrin.gif

Posted by: Rossoneri7 Nov 25 2007, 06:30 PM

Milan will qualify .. No doubt in my mind, let it be against Benfica or Celtic king.gif

For this game, I would put my money on a Milan win. Benfica is not what it used to be

Posted by: han2503 Nov 25 2007, 07:33 PM

Hopefully we'll win and the other game gives us a favourable result.

If we can qualify as group winners in this game we can concentrate 100% on Serie A and the CWC until the CL restarts again

Posted by: Darunia Nov 26 2007, 07:30 AM

I think Ambro is suspended for this..

My lineup:

Dida
Oddo-Nesta-Bonera-Serginho
Gattuso-Pirlo-Seedorf
Kaka
Ronaldo-Gilardino

A win would be great but a draw would suffice. If Seedorf can't go, Carlo will use Brocchi ... and if Ronaldo is too tired, he should play Gourcuff in x-mas tree but that seems doubtful

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Nov 26 2007, 09:12 AM

I'd thought initially Paolo would play for this. But I think he's in for the Juve match.

Posted by: aLbErTo Nov 26 2007, 12:48 PM

i think that bonera deserves his start...maybe a starting team could look like this

QUOTE
cafu - nesta - bonera - maldini

    gattuso - pirlo - serginho

          kaka - seedorf

                gilardino

i'm definite, that we'll play with one striker, one that hand ronaldo will start on the bench in my opinion...

this squad is just a speculation, it may look funny tongue.gif

Posted by: han2503 Nov 26 2007, 03:29 PM

Carlo will most probably go for the xmas tree, if Ambro is suspended then Brocchi will start rolleyes.gif

But if Seedorf isn't ready to play then I think we'll go for 2 strikers, even though I think Carlo will try to save Ronnie for Juve, same goes for Maldini

Oddo--Nesta--Bonera--Sergio
-----Rino---Pirlo---Brocchi-----
---------Kaka--Seedorf---------
------------Gila/Pippo-----------

or

Oddo--Nesta--Bonera--Sergio
-----Rino---Pirlo---Brocchi-----
-------------Kaka---------------
-------Ronaldo--Gila-----------

It all depends on whether Seedorf is fit or not

Goalkeepers: Dida, Fiori, Kalac.

Defenders: Bonera, Cafu, Favalli, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Oddo, Serginho, Simic.

Midfielders: Brocchi, Gattuso, Gourcuff, Kakà, Pirlo, Seedorf.

Attackers: Aubameyang, Gilardino, Ronaldo.

I think the formation would look like this:

QUOTE
Oddo-Nesta-Kakha-Favalli

Gattuso-Pirlo-Seedorf

---------Kaka'

Gilardino
-------------Ronaldo

Posted by: Darunia Nov 26 2007, 06:19 PM

No record for Pippo sad.gif

I hope Bonera gets the start, he deserves it

Posted by: Rossoneri7 Nov 26 2007, 06:21 PM

Yeah he does ... Who knows, we might see him too smile.gif

Don't worry about Pippo, he'll score in Moscow wink.gif

(&%^(%^(^$^%£*^$(^%(*

Ahem.

I wanted to see Pippo break the record and I wanted to watch Il CAPITANO.

Even so, it should be a good game. The weather is very good for this time of year and Benfica are still missing their best DM (Petit is still training separately). So...win for Milan.

I'm very annoyed as after a trip to Sagres (see map) my camera is not working. Hoping to get it fixed so I can get a good shot of Seedorf's @ss for dst. smile.gif (and one of NESTA for me)

(PS - Fillipo, your pm inbox is full).

AC Milan will be without veteran striker Filippo Inzaghi for Wednesday's Champions League clash at Benfica.

Inzaghi, who is the Rossoneri's leading scorer in Europe's elite club competition with three goals netted so far, is struggling with the flu and has been ruled out for the midweek encounter in Portugal.

The good news for the European champions is that Brazil striker Ronaldo has fully recovered from a thigh injury.

Ronaldo, who made his season debut in Sunday's 2-1 triumph in Cagliari, looked in fine form earning his side a penalty before hitting the post.

However, coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to leave the South American on the bench and play instead with lone striker Alberto Gilardino against Benfica.

"I don't think Ronaldo will play from the start," admitted Ancelotti.

Milan go into the contest in Lisbon knowing that a win would be sufficient to see them through to the next round with a game in hand.

The Rossoneri lead Group D having collected nine points in their last four games and know the importance of this match.

"We want to do well in Portugal," said Gilardino. "We want to make sure we secure qualification in order to be able to focus on our domestic campaign."

A win on Wednesday would be a big morale boost for the Rossoneri, who must brace themselves for a challenging weekend when they host Juventus.

Milan have failed to win a league game at home and cannot afford further slips if they wish to reduce their current 11-point deficit with Serie A leaders Internazionale.

But the defending champions will not have an easy task against Jose Antonio Camacho's side.

Benfica are in desperate need of points if they wish to revive their hopes of progressing to the next round.

The Portuguese giants sit bottom of the group, three points adrift of Shakhtar Donetsk and Celtic.

No player knows the task awaiting Benfica better than Rui Costa, who spent five years with Milan before deciding to return home.

"We know it's going to be a very difficult challenge but not impossible," said the Portuguese midfielder.

"We will face Milan with the same respect that we showed against Academica."

Camacho's men go into the encounter inspired by their 3-1 away triumph at Academica Coimbra, which marked their fifth consecutive triumph in the Portuguese SuperLiga.

"This was a very important win for us," admitted Camacho, whose team are second in the Liga standings, four points behind leaders Porto. "Now we must recover our strength in time for Wednesday's game."

The hosts will be without Augustin Binya, who serves the first of a six-match ban against Milan.

The visitors will be without suspended Massimo Ambrosini and the injured Marek Jankulovski.

Milan are hoping to recover experienced midfielder Clarence Seedorf, who sprained his left ankle in training on Saturday.

Seedorf has travelled to Lisbon but it is doubtful whether he will feature in the game.

no record breaking

Just seeing it from Carlo's perspective, and I can't imagine him starting Yoann in this one. And I don't even know if I personally would have him in the starting 11 but definately as a sub to give him a run out especially if we manage to take control of the game by the end of the 1st half

Come one man, you've been brainwashed too?? We don't need two DMF's, Gourcuff is perfect for this game, can cause a big upset since they don't know him at all... Benfica won't sit back and defend like Celtic did, they'll give us space and Yoann can work his magic and get back his lost confidence!

If we are not planning to give him any chances or if we don't believe in him then let's give him a chance to develop by selling him!! I don't want to see his careed go down in Milan, no matter how big a career it can be...

Of course not I've been arguing about this issue for nearly 3 days over in the other thread.

But as I also said I have no problem with using the 2 defensive mids in the CL it's in the Serie A that I have a problem with.

I personally would like to see Yoann get 45 whole minutes in this, just thought about giving them to him in the 2nd half because he is low on confidence and hopefully by then there would be no pressure on him and he can show us what he can really do.

But in the end we all know that Carlo will at most give him 20 minutes and that is a big if.

Or else, I'll have to rinse your brain and put it out to dry (deep fry) in the desert's sun tongue.gif

On a serious note though, I think Gourcuff will play in this tie, something like in the second half, if the team manages to close off the game.

But don't worry about his career ... He is convinced he wants to stay and I'm sure, as the season is still long, he'll get more chances wink.gif

You've been saying that since September... and he's been given... 2 chances (I don't count late subtitutes of course!)! That will make a total of less than 10 chances in the end of the season... not exactly what a young player needs to develop...

Ofcourse what I say doesn't necessarily mean it will happen, it is just how I see things ... But in the long run, he'll get to play. Not in Serie A or in CL though, rather the Coppa and maybe, just maybe start in some Serie A games IF he impresses. So I'd say he'd have 10 or so games to look forward too ... I'm not expecting him to bench anyone, anytime soon wink.gif

I'm not expecting him to bench anyone either. But that has nothing to do with it... we can't keep fielding the same 11 time and time again, we'll exhaust them to death... Gourcuff should be playing more, whether he's good enough or not... nowadays subtitutes are essential parts of a team. But oh wait, that's for teams who actually compete on all fronts, Milan have given up on the scudetto before it even started... wink.gif

Maybe, maybe Milan just didn't want the Scudetto wink.gif

Ofcourse rotation is important, especially for a long season like ours ... Just give it time .. There is still more games to play than what the team have already played in thus far.

The is not such thing 'didn't want' for Milan, but there is 'not doing enough'.

Everywhere the board, coach and the players was talking about scudetto. If Milan did the wrong things, it doesn't mean they didn't wanted to win it the first place. It's just means that some things must be fixes. I will never except 'Milan just didn't want the Scudetto'.

I heard we have no janku, seedorf, inzaghi, emerson, and ambrosini
This is a sign from God that we should start letting Gourcuff play

It's going to be something like this:

Dida
Oddo-Nesta-Kaladze-Serginho
Gattuso-Pirlo-Brocchi
Kaka-Seedorf
Gilardino

Carlo said Seedorf was fine, and Ronaldo would probably start from the bench.

He's an inbox striker... and with Carletto's system he needs to draw back to get the ball... and even when he gets it there's no one there to support his move (since we're not attackin) and he has to give the ball back again... it's so deadly boring! Such a forward should be fielded along with support players... you can blame him for missing the chance from Brocchi's cross when the game was still at 0-0 though!

LOL! Lazio - Olympiacos is at 1-1... those two also have 5 points, 6 goals scored and 6 conceded each and the first game in Athens ended 1-1 too! tongue.gif

I dunno what's wrong with Real today...they're playing like....well.... naive school children. They leave spaces in midfield big enough for an army of trucky to go through. And RvN missed a goal even I would have scored (honestly).

If we want to try and actually go for this thing then we have to face the dufficuilt opponent whether it's sooner or later it will come.

But having home advantage in the second leg is the most important thing and that is something only the group winners have a privelage of getting. So getting that top spot is essential if we want to go to the quarters.

Today we were just plain awful, Kaka was no where to be found, Gila was totally iscolated, and in the end we were playing with 4 central defenders and a RB and still couldn't contain them and try to keep the ball for more then 2 seconds.

That was really bad, and if we don't want to lose against Celtic we better get our acts together.

Our heads were totally somewhere else no one was concentrated on the game, the defence kepts making mistakes, the midfield couldn't string 3 passes together and Gila had no support. It's like the team that stepped out there today was playing together for the first time and not for the 5 years they actually have been playing together for.

Gattuso was really bad also, bad passes that kept sparking Benfica counters and wasn't helping Bonera on the wing much either. Sergio also had a game to forget.

The only guys that played well were Nesta and Kaladze. Kaladze saved our @sses twice out there. And while they were playing well SEPERATELY, they were not playing well as a unit, which is the most important thing between the 2 center backs

I agree, I'm happy that we're qualified. Of course everyone would've liked a win but we all know the situation. There's no doubt we are in need of fresh players in January. Maybe transfers in January will change the current underperforming Milan.

Carlo said that Ron felt a twinge whilst warming up, and did the right thing not to risk him when we didn't really need to score another goal.

I didn't think the performance was that bad. We were pinned back by a half decent side who had to win at all costs who were playing at home, so what. I'd rather we sat back and absorbed the pressure than play further up the pitch with a higher tempo, tiring our players out - especially with the fixture list we've got coming up. And with all the possession they had in the second half, they were only really limited to long range efforts that never really troubled Dida.

Essentially, we got the job done, no more, no less. My ratings:

Dida: 7
Bonera: 6
Nesta: 6.5
Kaladze: 7
Serginho: 5.5
Pirlo: 6.5
Gattuso: 5.5
Brocchi: 6
Seedorf: 6
Kaka: 5.5
Gila: 6

Maldini: 6.5
Oddo: 6
Gourcuff: 6.5

I was pleased for Yoann, I thought he had a tidy game and played well. I really hope he gets his chance soon.

I don't know, he's certainly not the R9 he used to be is he. But he's just coming back from a reasonably serious injury, so we can't expect too much.

I think he can still be useful, although it seems as though we're relying more and more on Pato's influence come January to take us all the way in the CL.

Yes, we cannot expect too much, but starting the season with three strikers [one of them being injury-prone Ronaldo, who till this day has missed three months of action] is so hard to take that I'm still struggling to get along with. and this is not just a normal season; this is the world's busiest team's season.

As for Pato, I just hope he can survive from this unfair pressure our management are putting on his shoulders... it's no piece of cake for a 18yo to lead a team as big as Milan's CL campaign. I don't know why our management think otherwise.

Phew! at least somebody in this forum is recognizing potential in him. If you ask me, i think the lad should get more time on the field to develop. People are different and we cant expect him to do a 'Kaka'.
Probably he needs more exposure to in live matches in order to be fully confident and mature as a player (who doesn't?).
Look at our squad, average age 30+, i don't understand....

Posted by: Tennie Nov 30 2007, 01:06 AM

Hiho all.

I'm just back from Lisbon (literally) and thought I'd add a couple of observations on the game and stuff that the TV probably didn't pick up.

1. Pato was there in warmups, chatting with Willy well before the match.
2. At the same time, Fester and Simic had a long conversation (20 minutes or so).
3. Vitoria (the eagle that's the Benfica mascot) is just /cool/.
4. Benfica's Luisao has braces.
5. You could've heard a pin drop when Pirlo scored his goal. The crowd was absolutely stunned.
6. There was applause even from the Benfica fans when Il Capitano came on.
7. The cameras may have picked it up but Ronnie warmed up for a good long while before he went over to the dugout and the physios worked on him for a few minutes. He sat back down.
8. Nesta was an absolute wall. A gorgeous one at that. [/girly comment]
9. There was applause when the Bremen-Madrid score was flashed on the big screen.

In general terms, I think Milan may have been playing for the draw. They didn't /need/ to win the game, after all. I think that the players were, to an extent, conserving energy by not going 100% all the time because the Juve game is coming up. That's also why there was such a bizarro lineup (that and stuff like Pippo's tonsilitis and Ronnie doing god knows what this time).

I did get my camera fixed - sort of - and have a couple of pictures that I'll try to post when I'm awake enough to figure out how to transfer them from camera to computer. (And yes, I even got one that dst will like).

Posted by: Tennie Nov 30 2007, 02:03 AM

As for the Fester-Simic convo, I couldn't really tell what they were saying (they were on the opposite side of the pitch), but it /seemed/ to be a cordial conversation. There appeared to be smiles and the like.

And yep, Luisao has braces. the old fashioned glue-them-to-your-teeth kind. Porty can probably find a picture (?).

Aside from the picture for dst, I've got one (I think) of Rui Costa and Il Capitano at the end of the game. Very nice pic if it turns out.

Also, players from both teams applauded the fans at the end of the game. There was a very small traveling contingent from Italy waaaaaay up in the nosebleed section behind one of the goals. They had a few banners too (from the banners I think it was Brigade Rossonere).

Posted by: Tennie Nov 30 2007, 03:54 AM

One more late addition before I collapse for some much-needed sleep.

Herewith are Gazzetta's player ratings for the game (and my translations of a couple of them):

Dida 6.5
Bonera 5.5
Nesta 7.5 (Unsurpassable. Starts well and ends better: as long as he's in this condition, Milan could allow him to stretch into the midfield)
Kaladze 7
Serginho 5
Maldini 6 (Three quarters of an hour on automatic pilot. He's nearly 40, but at times seems to have more energy than those who are young enough to be his sons).
Brocchi 6
Gourcuff 6
Pirlo 6.5
Gattuso 6.5
Kaka 5.5
Seedorf 5.5
Gilardino 5.5
