San Siro race against time

Friday 9 February, 2007 - FI

Milan are working day and night to get 28 turnstiles put in place so they can let the season ticket holders in to Sunday’s game against Livorno.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza – also known as San Siro – was not among the six arenas cleared to open under the new anti-violence laws, but their work is nearing completion.

“We are setting up 28 turnstiles on the old entrance to guarantee entrance on Sunday of at least 50,000 fans,” explained security chief Giovanni Terzi.

“The deadline for the local council inspection of the ground is on Saturday morning at 10am, so both clubs are working through the night to make sure the stadium can let supporters in, even if for the moment that’s only season ticket holders.”

Although San Siro does not have the electronic ticketing service, Adriano Galliani is confident the new turnstiles will be enough to open its gates this weekend.

“It’s not an issue of being optimistic or pessimistic, as with 28 turnstiles manned for personal ticket checks, I think we’ll be alright,” commented the Milan vice-President.

“We’re not asking for a full clean bill of health from the Government, but just for the season ticket holders to be able to get what they paid to see. I hope we can do this, because the city of Milan doesn’t deserve such a slap in the face.”

To date only six stadiums in all of Italy have passed the new Legge Pisanu guidelines – in Siena, Cagliari, Palermo, Turin, Genoa and Rome.

“Rome’s Stadio Olimpico remains open with 50 turnstiles for 80,000 people,” added security chief Terzi.

“If Milan are therefore turned down with the added 28 turnstiles, then in my view something has to be investigated. San Siro is also the only stadium ready for a European Championship match without needing further work, so it is a secure arena.”

very good news, it took something like this to wake up serie a and the italian goverment but it seems like a solution is in place. this ordeal is hopefully over and we can move on. what sickens me is how the medias of different countries have attacked not only italian football but culture as well because of this incident. i think it was terrible what hapened but plz similar and way worse things have happened in other countries like in england. it only took them 10-15 years to solve their problem. and what in the past 3 years a ref was hit with a rock, dida with a flare then this and suddenly italy should be stripped of their world cup, the goverment replaced, italy should be banned from all international competitions, etc. i think the FIGC are dealing well with this and soon we can all enjoy some compelling foobtall. i'm have some buddies over for the cletic clash, some of which are celtic fans so it will be fun.

San Siro open to season tickets

Only Milan season ticket holders will be allowed in to San Siro for the game against Livorno after emergency changes.

The official Rossoneri website confirmed the news this evening following an inspection by the authorities.

Work carried on through the night to install 28 new turnstiles at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, bringing the arena closer to the Legge Pisanu recommendations, at least enough to allow in the 37,297 Rossoneri season ticket holders.

“The rest of the work will be completed within the next two weeks, so San Siro will be up to standard very soon,” added security chief Giovanni Terzi.

While all fans are not yet allowed into the venue, Milan will have their supporters in the stands for Sunday’s clash with Livorno.

“I consider it a violation of the season ticket holder’s rights to deny them access to matches they have paid for,” insisted club President Silvio Berlusconi.

A former Prime Minister, he wasted no time in attacking the current Government’s sweeping clampdown on football-related violence in the wake of Chief Inspector Filippo Raciti’s death.

“The tragic incidents in Catania happened outside the stadium, so locking out season ticket holders is not addressing the problem. As Prime Minister, I would never have passed such a law.”

The club website has urged Milan supporters to arrive at the stadium early and will only be allowed in from gates 3, 4, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 25, 26, 37, 38, 41 and 42.

He lost that election by less than 1%. In the end of the day, he's the one who rules Italy. (IMG:http://cyrus.medialayer.net/~m1ke/milanfan.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)
