Eto'o out, so Milan go Brazilian

Tuesday 17 July, 2007
Barcelona have slammed the door on Milan’s Samuel Eto’o bid, so their attention turns towards Alexandre Pato and Julio Baptista.

The Rossoneri named Eto’o as one of their prime targets and there were reports today that a £28m bid had been tabled.

However, this evening Barca President Joan Laporta responded to the interest in the Cameroon striker.

“Eto’o is not for sale. This coming season Barcelona’s front line while be a poker of stars – Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Eto’o.”

FIFA agent Ernesto Bronzetti also doubts that Milan could get their hands on the African hitman.

“I really doubt Eto’o will join Milan. Barcelona have no intention of selling their forward,” he noted.

So Carlo Ancelotti and transfer guru Adriano Galliani must turn their attention to other targets.

Already having a squad packed with Brazilians, they are again looking to the South American nation for reinforcements.

Milan’s interest in Under-20 World Cup starlet Pato is well known and they face a battle with Inter, Chelsea and Real Madrid for his services.

A new name to add to the list is Julio Baptista, who scored a sensational goal in Brazil’s 3-0 Copa America Final victory over Argentina on Sunday.

He spent this season on loan at Arsenal, but is still owned by Real Madrid and would be happy to accept the San Siro switch.

An attacking midfielder, he could allow Kaka to move further up the field to continue his goal-scoring exploits.

I think Baptista, in the end, will stay in Madrid.

But I really want Pato. Official on our website and Internacional one, not the "done deal" from the mouth of half-Italy, Leonardo, Kaka' or Tassotti.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport believe that the Rossoneri will bring in one star name before the start of the new campaign and have included Eto'o with Ronaldinho, Didier Drogba, Andriy Shevchenko and Alexendre Pato.

The Italian daily has pictures of the five players on the front page with the words "I will sign one of these" from Milan vice president, Adriano Galliani.

"We will try to sign another great player up front," the Italian club's director is quoted as saying.

"I cannot tell you which one though out of respect for the club's involved. There is also a sixth one, who is non-EU, but I will ont say who even under torture."

In Catalunya, Sport have said that Ronaldinho has already bene ruled out by Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and laughed off a successful bid for Eto'o.

The paper stated that Galliani is joking if he considers that either Barça or Chelsea will allow their players to leave.

Comparisons are made between the Milanista director making false promises to sign heavyweight players and Real Madrid supremo Ramón Calderón's declaration that he would capture Kaká.

Over in Madrid, Marca are keen to ensure that the pot is kept boiling at Camp Nou and have suggested that a delegation from Milan are due in Barcelona with a blank cheque.

The story continues by including Arsenal and Chelsea and stating that the London duo are also keeping tabs on the situation.

Eto'o has stated on numerous occasions that he has no intention of leaving Barça, while president Joan Laporta has said that none of the club's top players will be allowed to leave this summer.
