Don't get me wrong, the guy is scum, but he's a genius on the ball and Italy need a bit of that with their lack of a true trequartista

Sadly.

I agree on his quality, only problem is he cannot play 90 minutes in the heat.

(In any case, I have come to despise the dude.)

I'd personally prefer a one legged Cassano if the alternative in Prandelli's mind is Candreva

I seriously don't get this, Cassano, Insigne and Cerci are SO much better than this dud. I just don't know WTF Prandelli sees in this dude

Giaccherini is also better than this guy. At least Giaccherini gives you 100%, always involved, always trying. With Candreva on it feels like playing with 10 men. He just doesn't add anything to the game

I will definitely cheer for him

Think you're horribly over rating him. He is/was very talented but miles off genius.

This. Totally. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) The last genius I saw play for Italy was Baggio. One of my favorite players, still, top five! Totti for me was the only other guy able to mount a challenge when it came to on field magic. The rest are all mortals. And this guy you mention, I guess, he's okay. Does whatever a lot of big name players do.

But truly magical? Footballing genius? I'd reserve that for the very best, thank you very much!

I think Del Piero was a genius. Pirlo surely is as well, just like Albertini, but in a different way.

I never adored Baggio that much to be honest. Yes, he was a genius, but consistency wasn't his thing. He also never managed to take the team in his hand a lead the way through, something Del Piero, Totti or even Albertini knew how to do in and out.

Del Piero and Totti both never really performed for the national team.

There are different levels of genius. A player can be a genius but waste it away like Cassano has throughout his career.

Yeah, he was a moments player. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) A touch player. If he is in the touch, he'd pull off magic, it not, well, then not so much. That is why he is fifth place in my top 5 of all time, but for me Baggio was a joy to watch. And he had all the talent in the world, with a vision and class to match.

Consistency, however, not that much. And that's a fact.

So which player did perform for Italy on a constant basis and was a genius? I think you won't find many.

Totti had his ups and downs, but in terms of consistency him and especially Del Piero easily top Baggio. Especially in big tournaments.

Baggio carried Italy to a final and scored in 3 Wold Cup tournaments. I think Baggio was much more influential for Italy than either Totti or Del Piero.

Totti and DP have both been club legends but I really don't remember any tournament where they were the undisputed stars of the Azzurri and produced games where they carried the team, like what Baggio did in 94 for example

1994 was Baggio's biggest event; yet he did leave bad taste with the missed penalty. Otherwise he was too streaky for my taste.

Pirlo has been quite influential and consistent for Italy in the past ten years.
