Nice pick. They are ours biggest rivals. Did you googled on this? biggrin.gif

Although right now Beitar Jerusalem is the better and richer club (A billionaire bought them two years ago).

I put 'local derby' in on Wikipedia and found the Israel ones.

it says Hapoel Haifa is your city derby, but they suck so you'd just getting bragging rights on me all the time. tongue.gif

So I picked MTA, they've had a few decent runs in Europe from what I can remember, plus it's even better that you say they're big rivals with you. biggrin.gif

Yeah, they played in the CL few years ago but were awful. When Maccabi Haifa was there we manged to win 3:0 against United and finish 3 in the group ahead of Olimpiacos. And last year we were in the 1/8 of the Uefa cup eliminatig Cska along the way. smile.gif

But you can start supporting Shakhtar Donetsk cuz I'm a big Dynamo Kiev fan biggrin.gif

I checked the league rankings. Israel have the 19th best league apparently. It's not too far off Turkey and Greece either, which shows it's on the up because those two have some pretty fiercesome teams. Let's just hope it keeps getting better. wink.gif

Nah, I also like Dynamo Kiev. Mainly because of the Sheva/Rebrov thing. cool.gif

I think it ended 5-0 or 6-1... not sure.

I was referring to both Greece and Turkey and the teams they have.

Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK, Besiktas, Fenerbache and Galatasary are all good teams. For the Israel league to be only a few positions below them is quite good, that's all I was implying. smile.gif

Can someone from the german crew (LaPalma and co) enlight me about Berliner FC Dynamo (commonly Dynamo Berlin)?

I mean... they've 10 league titles (only behind Bayern), how can't they be in Bundesliga (I know they won in RDA but even with that...) ? As from Berlin... they're the main club from the capital (fan-base) like Real Madrid or Benfica? What happened to them?

I heard they were they linked with... Stasi? huh.gif Any true in this?

Enlight me, please.

Still waiting for someone to answer me the question above...

********************************************************************

Anyway... NEWS FROM PORTUGAL and from our bwinLIGA (Portuguese League):

FC Porto:
-They just signed Kazmierczak, strong midfielder from Poland, that played in Boavista last season.
-After Anderson, FC Porto president said Pepe, Lucho and Quaresma [the other big guns] are staying.

Sporting Lisbon:
-Derlei, ex-Porto and ex-Benfica (was on loan from Dynamo Moscow last year but he was sh!t) is about to sign for them.
-Grimi, our Grimi biggrin.gif , could be loaned to them. Reports in down here.

Benfica:
-Joe Berardo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Berardo], one of the richest people in Portugal, is trying to buy 60% (or 85%) of the club. Basically he wants to become the largest individual stockholder in the club.
-Oscar Cardozo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Cardozo], the top-scorer in Argentina Clausura League, signed a contract with Benfica. 9,1M/euros is what Newell's Old Boys get. It's a big surprise for a portuguese club to spend big. Yeah... 9 M/euros is A LOT for a portuguese club. But it seems SL Benfica wants to build a much better team for next year.

Posted by: dst Jun 21 2007, 11:25 PM

I'm glad Benfica are setting their aims high! smile.gif

Any news about Nelson? I guess he'll probably stay but has he been linked with any team?

He's staying for sure. He'll fight with Marc Zoro for the RB place next season. But he's only 24. If he wants he'll get better and better. Just needs motivation.

I don't know which team was but I heard Benfica refused an offer, about 1-2 weeks ago.

Posted by: dst Jun 21 2007, 11:59 PM

He really amazed me when I first watched him play in 05/06 but last season it seemed like he had not gotten any better... he was injured for some time there, I just hope he tries more because I'm sure he can be great!!

Main problem is that he had no "competition" for the RB place in Benfica since last December when they sold Alcides.

So he just relaxed since then... rolleyes.gif

Well, I didn't know much about Dynamo Berlin because I'm from West Germany, but I investigated a little bit and this is what I found out:
The name Dynamo in East Germany alwasy stood for a club being sponsored by the interior ministry and the police, and Dynamo Berlin in particular was called the "Stasi Klub" by the people in Eastern Germany. The "Minister für Staatssicherheit" (Stasi) Erich Mielke was a huge fan of them and also did them one or two favours (Transfers etc.).
About their fan base. As a "Stasi Klub" the Club was very unpopular among East german football fans. After 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall the mssing support of the SED (Socialist Party in former East Germany) the Club went down to the forth league, and all their good players went to Clubs in West Germany (Thomas Doll, Falko Götz, Andreas Thom).

Well, that's what happened to many Clubs from Eastern Germany after 1990. They simply weren't good enough for the Bundesliga...and still aren't. Dynamo Dresden (former club of the famous Matthias Sammer) which was also supported by the Stasi will play in the 2.Bundesliga next year after they spent years in the third league.

Besides Hertha BSC Berlin (Berlin is not the "real" eastern Germany) there are only two clubs from eastern Germany in the Bundesliga next year...

I used to love him back in his Lazio/Parma days! I'll never forget that hat-trick he scored past Germany at Euro 2000 either. laugh.gif

He went to Standard Liege in 2004, won Player of the Season in 2005. Though the last I heard of him isn't very good. Apparently he spat on a player and attacked a referee, which resulted in suspension for 3 years. sad.gif

That was about a year ago, though. Not sure if he's played since, I think Porty may know more than me, even if he is playing in Belgium.

P.S. He's 32, 33 in November.

Yes. 2 years.

Everyone thought he was joining Braga this year but it seems he's going to Arabia. I dunno how good he is at the moment. He was a nice winger - a player that gives all he has. I did a nice job in Belgium until he fvcked a ref laugh.gif (Typical portuguese).

Now it's official: Klose to Bayern.

Miroslav Klose wechselt zum FC Bayern

http://www.fcbayern.t-home.de/de/aktuell/news/2007/12213.php?fcb_sid=e105de1b9bb6882f5cfd388cbebf9689

Everybody wants to win it, the UEFA Cup is VERY hard to win. One poor game and you're as good as out of it, in the CL you're allowed to play poorly a few times and can still get away with it.

I hope the Milan board didn't think like that, that's very disrespectful to teams that on that level.

I don't think we were disrespectful. Back then we had a very bad season (we even lost to Hapoel Tel Aviv ohmy.gif biggrin.gif ): Some crappy players and Sheva who carried the team had a big injury.

Actually, I wanted us to win it since Uefa cup is the only european trophy Milan miss.

Unfortunately, it looks like he's going to be a disappointment to the US fans.

I saw an interview with Lalas earlier today, he's trying to make some of the newer fans understand that he's not what they think. Apparently, they belive he's going to bang in the goals every week and they're going to win all the time. I'm not certain some of them actually know what Beckham is, in terms of a player.

Keeping with the MLS theme..

I managed to catch the MLS All-Star game tonight (Repeat, it was played a few days ago). I was pleasently surprised with how well they played. Celtic pretty much took their full team with a very competitive first XI.

Now I know it's all the best players from the MLS, but even so, to beat a team like Celtic is surely something? I mean, Milan played 210 minutes against Celtic and only won 1-0. The MLS also missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed, and in my opinion dominated the game, Celtic didn't have too many chances. Hopefully it's a sign that the sport's improving over there.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YMywZHF7iF0&mode=related&search=

Goals from two Colombians, Angel and Toja.

On a side note, I was very pleased on a personal level. With Angel being one of the biggest fan favourites ever at the Villa it was nice to see him..
Top the voting to be selected in the first XI
Score
Be the All-Star MVP

Like I said, ON THE FIELD, he'll make a bigger impact than Becks. cool.gif

when he does score them their spectacular but even in a lesser league than la liga or premier league i dont think he'll score more than 7-8 goals a season. and i dont think we'll see as much crossing from him because he should be played in the center of midfield so he can see more of the ball plus he'll run less.

Lot of rumours about Simao Sabrosa (Benfica) going to Atletico Madrid for 20M/euros + 2 players from Atletico.

Good choice. rolleyes.gif He prefers to play the Intertoto than in the Champions League.
Money talks, plus Atletico is full of it since they got 30M from F.Torres.

Porto lost Pepe and Anderson. Sporting Nani. Benfica probably Simao.

I think it's all Nike's fault with this guy, they hyped him up so much when he was like 14/15 I remember seeing clips on their site of him and images splashed everywhere. Hard to believe, isn't it?smile.gif There are, though - at least by American standards. They always hold a big tailgate party before the game (food, BEER, snacks, BEER). They have banners, chants, rude songs for the other teams (along with the occasional chant of 'f*ck you ref' if there's a bad call), etc etc etc. (According to my friend, the new banner for tonight will be 'Bench it like Beckham'). They stand through the entire game and don't STOP with the chants and songs. The odd thing about the DC groups (there are two big groups and a couple of smaller ones) is that they sit at center pitch down low opposite the benches instead of behind the goalposts. I've been told that it's because it looks better on tv.

EDIT for Jack: My friend has two season tickets and the person she usually goes with is out of town, so I'm going with her. smile.gif

The end of FdL wasn't only by the problem with Juventus Ultras. Silvio was also a problem for them.

QUOTE
There were already some problems in the group, but it all went wrong with the Milan-Juve match. As we all know, there were some flags from Viking Milano on Curva Sud. A couple of capo's didn't agreed with showing the flags. It happend anyway. The Juventini said this action was very cowardly, because the flags were found, not stolen. But later it appears that someone from FdL got those flags from some Juventini...
Because of that incident there were some discussions about how to go on, not everyone had the same mentality anymore, etc. Discussions or not, they still decided to go to travel to Eindhoven for the CL match against PSV. After that match some FdL guys were treathend (with knives) by some Vikings (probably a Dutch section... don't know about that). That was how the FdL banner got in hands of the Vikings. There was complete chaos between in the FdL organisation because of this incident. Some blamed the group who got the Viking flags, some blamed the Juventini. Despite a long meeting, they decided to end the group...

[Viking Milano = Juventus Ultras - Milano section]
[Capo's = Leaders of the group]
But again... there were already serious problems in FdL. Even with Milan (club).

Curious how the biggest groups in Italy disbanded: FdL, CUCS (Roma), FdG (Genoa), CUCB (Napoli).

Nop. Nothing to do with it.

FdL was a left-wing group. BRN is the right-wing (although not extreme) one in Curva Sud but it's not usual to hear or to see any racist thing in Milan Curva.

"Extreme" right-wing is in the other side of San Siro: Viking Inter. (Just like Viking Juventus)
Boys San are right-wing too but not as extreme as the Viking.

Remember Zoro-Messina in San Siro some years ago in a match vs. Inter? rolleyes.gif

Well, I'm back from the DC -LA game. It was an interesting experience. smile.gif Good game, all things considered, even though DC missed three or four absolute sitters. It started bucketing right after the second half started and even though I was in the fifth row, it was hard to see what was going on. The loud squeals alerted me to the fact that Beckham came on -- he did have one good, bending free kick but was otherwise not much of a factor in the game.

There were a couple of new chants by the DC fans tonight:

'Landon Donovan's the p*ssy of the year' (true, this one. bad overacting on challenges that'd make even an Argentine blush).

and my personal favourite: 'We sing better than your wife does'. smile.gif

Posted by: Tennie Aug 10 2007, 04:30 AM

Oh, oops. Score was 1-0 DC. Luciano Emilio (the MLS leading scorer) in the 27th. Abel Xavier pretty much singlehandedly stopped it from being more than that, not counting the sitters. DC dominated the game though LA did have a few decent chances.

Quaresma didn't play on the wing today. Weird tactics by Porto coach...

I think they'll miss Pepe in the back-4 and Anderson creativity. They missed Lucho tonight but still... they should have done a lot better.

15th min in, the two best chances so far have been DC's. LA doesn't look dire like they have most of the season, but the DC defense hasn't really been troubled much yet. And the pitch is shamefully bad, even worse than the re-striped American football fields that some teams use.

EDIT: Landon Donovan must be part Argentine. He's had a couple of pretty spectacular aerial 'trips' really close to the box. The ref hasn't fallen for it yet. And no, no cape and crown, though there was a special photo session with him and the refereeing staff and there have been a lot of crowd shots of Posh.

All over in the Portuguese League day 1:

Sporting won 4-1. FCPorto won 2-1 and Benfica drew against a sh!t team (1-1).

-Sporting is clearly the best team at the moment. Playing some nice football and scoring goals.
-Porto have Quaresma... who solved the match in 2 set-pieces. But Porto seems to be worse than last year.
-Benfica without Simao... have no-one. Played sh!t vs. Copenagen and now the same vs. a poor team. The team without some more transfers is going nowhere. A shame for the importance of the club in history.

The problem of Benfica is the stability. They're like R.Madrid or Inter in that. Always with problems inside the club, the directors, the coach, the players, etc...

They're the biggest club here so much more pressure to them.
Last season the problem was the injuries and the lack of options besides the first 11.

Benfica had Simao, they sold... and they're fvcked. Simple as that. Simao was their icon, their symbol, their... everything in the last 5-6 seasons.

And their coach is not that good too. We'll see what happens until the 31 but they really need someone that makes the diference, essentially in the midfield.

Eeek about the Portuguese results (though I do rather like Sporting's style of play. Their coach needs a new haircut badly, though).

In other news, FC Beckham and the NY Red Bulls are tied 2-2 at the half.

Do you know if Beckham or Angel scored?

Posted by: Tennie Aug 19 2007, 02:07 AM

Beckham no, though he did assist his team's two goals (both off of set pieces).

It's now 3-2 for NY in the 70th. NY's goals were by Angel, Mathis, and Altidore.

EDIT: Make that 4-3. Altidore just got another one. Very pretty goal that was answered within a minute by Donovan.

Yup. Benfica fired F.Santos and rumours about Camacho as the new coach.

Camacho was probably their best coach in the last decade (even better than Trapattoni) the problem was that Mourinho was in Porto in that time.

Cardozo (they new striker) scored the other 2. We've to watch out with the left foot of this guy. But their new real star is without a doubt the argentine wonderkid Di Maria.

They just showed highlights from the Portuguese league (they do this on Tuesdays) on the football news program. The ball definitely went over the touchline on that cross for Porto's second goal. Bad call there (or does Pinto da Costa own all the refs?). Rui Costa's goal was very pretty, ran around 3 defenders and put the ball right into the corner. And yeah, Cardozo is going to be tricky.

Marseille won 2-1 against Lyon in a really amazing match. Great football by both sides. I hope Marseille reaches the CL second round. Of course they also have to get out from the bottom positions of their league.

Their team really has potential - Niang, Nasri, Valbuena, Mandanda (played terrific against Lyon); Milan really should watch the french league closer.

Posted by: Tennie Nov 18 2007, 10:18 PM

I'm just back from the MLS Cup, the final game of the MLS season. The Houston Dynamo beat the New England Revolution 2-1.

After the most excellent tailgate (5 kegs!), I was sitting with the DC United support who were right between the Houston and New England support. The DC supporters were busy chanting their own stuff, which was highly amusing, and were on the whole mostly supporting Houston.

Not really game related, but Placido Domingo singing the national anthem was just cool.

The game was...okay, I guess, but the most fun once we got into the stadium were the chants. Some of my favorites:

'This is boring'
'Sale at Macy's'
'We can't hear you' (directed at the New England fans. The Houston fans were amazing)
And then of course the rousing rendition of '99 bottles of beer on the wall', sung all the way down to 0. This, apparently, was heard on national television (ABC televised the game live).

Talking of World Cup Qualifying. Riquelme had a superb game last night, scored 2 and controlled the whole game as the Argies won 3-0. Paraguay looked superb, beating Ecuador 5-1 (Could have been much more). I think they'll surprise a few people at the next World Cup.

Funny, some even questioned whether I supported Milan or inter, because of how much i hyped up the Tango in the last WC. For some reason, I have always had a soft spot for Argentina (maybe Maradona had something to do with it ..) ... They play the best football on the international level. I like their game plan, how there is always 3 players around the ball, amazing how they play, so dynamic.

Venezuela-Bolivia currently on in the SAM World Cup qualifying. Venezuela are the only SAM nation never to reach a World Cup, I hope they do this time, especially after they hosted such a good Copa America last year!

They should win this game as Bolivia are the whipping boys of the group.

Been a great game so far. Bolivia took a shot lead on 20 minutes, only for Venezuela to equalise within a minute. Bolivia have just re-taken the lead on 26.

Juan Sebastian Veron and D.C. United have agreed to a $3-4 million a year deal that will be signed and officially announced next week, SI.com has learned.

The 32-year-old Argentinean midfielder, who has played for Manchester United and Chelsea, will leave his current club, Estudiantes de la Plata, on Saturday when his contract officially runs out and is scheduled to arrive in Washington D.C. on Wednesday for an introductory press conference.

Veron becomes the latest international player to move to Major League Soccer and the highest profile signing since David Beckham.

Veron's record-breaking transfer to Manchester United from Lazio in July 2001 for $57 million, and subsequent transfer to Chelsea for $30 million two years later, are widely regarded as two of the worst signings in the history of British soccer. While he was named one of the greatest living soccer players by Pele in 2004, his time in England was primarily marred by injuries and an inability to adapt to the quicker pace of the Premier League.

Although his deal with D.C. United won't be nearly as large as his previous transfers, United believes he will have more success in the MLS than in England if given the proper space that made him one of the best midfielders to ever play in Italy and Argentina.

Veron has been on the Argentine national team since 1996 and most recently helped his country advance to the finals of the Copa America tournament this summer. He enjoyed his most success while playing for Italian clubs Parma and Lazio where he won the UEFA Cup and the Serie A championship before transferring to Manchester United.

After his injury plagued stint with Chelsea, where he appeared in only seven matches during his first season, he was loaned to Inter where he won the 2005 and 2006 Coppa Italia.

Since 2006 Veron has been with Estudiantes de la Plata, the team he began his professional career with in 1994. Veron, who has made 34 appearances and scored 5 goals for Estudiantes since his return to the Argentinean club last year, was approached about a possible move to D.C. United in July but he rebuffed the offer until he met with United officials again last month and expressed his desire to join the club.

Sad sad.gif

I used to be a HUGE Veron fan .... But him moving to the EPL, was like suicide. He killed his career by making that move.

Anyways, the way things are, I think more and more players in their mid 30's will go over to the MLS ... It is definitely a plus for the MLS, as they can always learn from these experienced players.

Posted by: Tennie Dec 15 2007, 03:56 PM

About David Luiz, who Porty mentions above: he's quite good. I was really impressed with him in the Benfica-Milan game I watched.

And in a move that's unsurprising (and a bit of a relief) to me, Veron has pulled out of the move to DC United...again. Did the same thing last year. At least DC United won't have Argie cooties.smile.gif

Motherwell midfielder Phil O'Donnell has died after collapsing during his side's 5-3 win over Dundee United.

O'Donnell collapsed to the ground as he was about to be substituted at Fir Park and received five minutes' treatment before being stretchered to an ambulance.

But Motherwell chairman Bill Dickie has confirmed that the 35-year-old has died after being taken to hospital.

Dickie said: "Unfortunately I can confirm very, very sad news that Phil O'Donnell has lost his life.

"We don't know what it was, but there will be a post-mortem. This is a tragic happening and that's all I can say."

Devastated

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee said: "I don't want to say anything more than how devastated everyone at the club is for his wife and his young children.

"That's what we are all feeling tonight, nothing else matters.

"Obviously from the club's point of view we'll gather round to give his family as much support as they need."

Speaking after the game, before news of O'Donnell's death had come through, McGhee confirmed the substitution was 'a coincidence'.

McGhee later replaced David Clarkson - O'Donnell's nephew - who had been shaken up by the incident.

"We took Clarkson off because he got a fright from the nature of the collapse," said McGhee.

"A few of the boys got a fright."

O'Donnell started his career at Motherwell before leaving for Celtic in 1994 and then joining Sheffield Wednesday five years later.

He returned to Fir Park in January 2004 and was captain of a Well side who have been performing above expectations this season.

Portuguese League - bwinLIGA at the Winter break (14 matches played):

1. FC Porto 35 pts
2. SL Benfica 28 pts
3. Sporting CP 26 pts
...

Porto leading it without problems even without Pepe (R.Madrid) and Anderson (M.United). Quaresma is just someone too good for this league. He and Lucho Gonzalez are the 2 best players in Porto. Lisandro Lopez is scoring some goals too but the other 2 are in a level too high for the Portuguese League.

Benfica is still building a new era at the club with the likes of Cardozo, Di Maria, Bynia, Adu, Rodriguez, David Luiz, F.Coentrao... all quality players plus some other already established at the club: Luisao, Petit, N.Gomes, Katsouranis... but Camacho needs time to build a good squad for the future. Time.

Sporting is always the same. Fighting for the 2nd/3rd place with the kids coming from their 'famous' youth-system. Miguel Veloso, Moutinho, Vukcevic, Yzmailov and Liedson are their best players.

[Rui Costa has announced that he'll retire at the end of the season. In the future, he sees himself in a director's role at Benfica.]

[Caveat: My Portuguese isn't very good. If I've messed up on any of this information, my apologies and please someone correct me.]

FIGHT NIGHT at Benfica's game yesterday v. Vitoria Setubal.

Apparently, after Benfica conceded a goal, Luisao and Katsouranis got into a fight and had to be separated by teammate David Luiz. They were both substituted out quickly thereafter but Benfica coach Camacho has slapped them both with internal suspensions and neither was permitted to train today.

The club will have 'emergency meetings' tomorrow to discuss the situation and I suspect both players will be hit with fines.

Blatter wants Cup of Nations move

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has told the BBC that the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations must be changed.

Blatter said that by 2016, the biennial tournament must be held in June and July like other major tournaments.

Earlier this week, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) insisted that the competition will continue to kick off in January.

There have been frequent complaints from European clubs who lose key players to the tournament.

"This is a tradition, but one should have now the courage to go into the international calendar and see if it's not possible to deal with it," said Blatter.

"We put a target for 2016 that by that time the international calendar must be definitely in accordance with the interests of everybody."

Around 40 African players in the English Premier League will be in Ghana for the Nations Cup.

Caf has maintained that the June weather in much of Africa is not ideal for football.

There would also be the problem of a clash with the World Cup every four years, but Blatter suggested that the Nations Cup could be moved to odd years.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/7194966.stm

Is this guy honestly the President of FIFA? He really lacks the ability to think.

Not only is he disrespecting tradition by asking them to change the years that it's played on, but he's obviously got no intelligence at all. Africa is pretty damn hot as it is, but asking them to play in June/July!? He's basically asking for more football related deaths here. rolleyes.gif

Benfica have signed Portuguese striker Aziza Makukula. Makukula was a Seville player on loan to Maritimo in Portugal. He scored for Portugal in Nov in Euro qualifying and is in Scolari's team for the upcoming friendly with Italy.

And DC United have signed Argentine midfielder Marcelo Gallardo. Gallardo is United's 'Designated Player' (read: his salary doesn't count in the club's salary cap). He's played for River Plate, OM, and played for the Argentine NT during the 1998 and 2002 world cups. (Ack, the local team will have Argie cooties!)

Best foward in Portugal along with Lisandro from Porto, Liedson - Sporting and Cardozo from Benfica too. Very good add for them and only for 3,5M/euros(?!). ohmy.gif

Benfica will play 2 quality 'towers' upfront now: Makukula (1,90m) and Cardozo (1,93m).

Makukula is the best CF/ST Scolari have for the 4-3-3 in the NT. Hugo Almeida is good too but Makukula is more 'agressive'. People prefer him.

As the time goes by the Portuguese League is more and more interesting... not. dry.gif

This weekend there was 2 derbies. The Lisbon and the Porto one.

Sporting 1-1 Benfica
Boavista 0-0 FC Porto

Table:

1. FC Porto 51 pts
2. Benfica 39
3. Guimaraes 35
4. Setubal 34
5. Sporting 34

9 matches to play and 12 points difference from Porto to Benfica and Benfica still plays in Porto stadium. rolleyes.gif
Sporting needs to step up or they'll kiss goodbye to the 3rd place and the CL 3rd pre. (The 2nd place gives CL group stage, no 3rd pre)

So it's difficult to predict anything. The mediocrity of Benfica and Sporting is unbelievable. Their worst season of the decade probably. Benfica has management problems; Sporting is more about the debt and that they simply don't have money (have to sell Nani's, Ronaldo's, etc). With this FC Porto is laughing at everybody...

Benfica drew against the last team in the table and Camacho resigned. They're still in the 2nd place... 14 points(!!!) behind Porto.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Mar 9 2008, 11:32 PM

Looks like Porto will be celebrating another league table in the coming months then.

I never really liked Camacho anyways.

Posted by: Tennie Mar 9 2008, 11:32 PM

Yikes. Camacho resigned? Didn't he just bury his father?

Man, it seems like only Porto are doing decently well in the Portuguese league.

Yes. His father died some days ago.

Porto is a bit like Inter. They don't need to run 90min to win a match. They just need to put some pressure in the beginning to Lisandro, Quaresma or Lucho solve the match.

I believe there will be a 20 points gap by the end of Portuguese Liga. If not more.

Scottish League Cup Final this weekend for my other team Rangers.

Hopefully the first piece of silerware of the season is heading to Ibrox and I am also hoping it's the first of 2 or 3.

Dundee United-Rangers in the Cup Final. Dundee lead, with 5 minutes remaining an awful back-pass allowed Kris Boyd to steal in and put it past the keeper. Rangers were awful and grabbed an equaliser in a very fortunate way.. They'll surely go on and win it now.

EDIT: Dundee U 2-1 Rangers. ohmy.gif

2nd half of ET being played.

EDIT 2: Great ball in by former Villan Steven Davis. Kris Boyd gets his 2nd of the game, 2-2.. Why was Boyd on the bench to begin with, with a scoring record like that? unsure.gif

EDIT: Penalties it is.

Rangers won 3-2 on penalties. Kris Boyd equalised in normal time, in ET then scored the winner from the spot.

Porto won yesterday. Benfica - mediocre as usual - drew in Madeira.

Now the gap is 16 points (!!!). This means Porto only need 5 points to be Champ.

He's a good footballer, a decent footballer. He's always been at great clubs surrounded by World class players, but he's certainly not World class himself and never has been. His clubs have won him the trophies, not him.

(Lippi on Beckham)

Yeah, and you're a decent manager. Not a World class manager. The players you've had have won you the trophies, not you. rolleyes.gif

One of the best passers, crossers and set-peice takers I've ever seen. As for "His clubs won him trophies, not him", while I agree that not 1 player makes a team, the stats prove he was important.

Beckham's last 5 years at United: 4 league titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 Champions League.
Uniteds' first 5 years without Beckham: 1 league title, 1 FA Cup, 1 league Cup.

It seems they do miss him, afterall. I think his celebrity lifestyle actually took away from how good he actually was as a player. If he didn't have that type of personal life, he'd be much more respected as a player. Congrats on the 100th cap, Becks.

Posted by: Jack Sparrow Mar 27 2008, 04:34 AM

I agree with kurt (I won't make it a habit though.. tongue.gif)

The media diss Beckham for nothing. The pundits call him a one-trick pony. I think it was a case of envy from the pundits...they never probably received the adulation he did. tongue.gif

And as for the media...they built him up, weren't Posh and Becks supposed to be Britain's second royal family?? And then surprise..surprise...they pull him down.

True he had only a right foot, and he couldn't dribble. He could cross, he could shoot decently, and was one of the best free-kick takers in the world. And he had a tremendous work rate, and you could see he put the team in front of him. Sometimes I think players like Giggs, Scholes and Beckham are really underrated. These three were the only reason I liked Man U once upon a time.

As for Lippi's comments. In the last WC if it weren't for Beckham, England would be in the rather embarassing position of having drawn with Ecuador. He dragged them through. I remember in one of those games he was even playing as RB for the team(If he'd come to Milan earlier, we'd have made a great RB out of him).

Oh and why doesn't Mr.Lippi ask Capello what he thinks of Beckham. Oh yeah...Capello's debut season trophy guarantee..if it holds it is because of Mr.David Robert Joesph Beckham OBE. Thank you very much.

Yeesh!

I know Becks was a seen as a saviour for Engalnd in the mid and late 90ies. He was like a promise. A promise for a better future. To bring England back to the top of international football. That he did obviously not achieve.
He had moments or periods when he was world class for sure. But he was too much of a show man to really use his talent. I think that's why SAF allowed him to leave ManU...he knew Becks would fit in at Real with all that media presence (even much mroe than in Manchester) etc.
He was close. An unfinished player.

You really believe United did not win anything in that period because Beckham left? He was so good that he lifted a whole team on his own? Come on. And then in Madrid why couldn't he win anything until last season?

Why isn't Zidane a crappy player? I'm using the same logic you used; Beckham in United, United win. Beckham out, United lose. Beckham rocks! Zidane in Real, Real don't win. Zidane out, Real win. Zidane sucks! By era I mean different period... as in the period Beckham was there and the period after that.

You're completely miss-quoting here. Did I say Beckham was the ONLY reason United won things while he was there? No. But he clearly made a difference, enough difference for them to be much less succesful after he left.

Maybe Beckham and Zidane didn't fit in Madrid? It's the same principle as Sheva. Milan won alot wtih him, with him gone we're struggling to be anything like the team we were with him. But is he still the unstoppable goalscorer at Chelsea? No, he just doesn't fit.

Posted by: Tennie Mar 27 2008, 06:46 PM

I feel really bad for viewers of Sky Sports (UK verison). They're now interviewing Max Bretos puke.gif as the 'expert' on MLS about the American view on Beckham getting his 100th cap.

As for Beckham's quality...well, I'm no fan of the guy but he was quite good at Manchester as part of their midfield. Reallyreally good. Thing is, even so I think the other three guys at the time (Scholes, Giggs, Keane) were even better in their respective positions. It was one hell of a midfield.

As for Madrid, one can't really necessarily judge anyone's performances in the 2003 or so - 2006 era because the place was an absolute zoo with the inmates running the asylum. Not gonna judge anyone's ability/quality/whatever from that era because I don't think it'd really be fair.

What I found most telling about Beckham currently was a piece on the BBC sport website today. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7315991.stm) I didn't see the France-England game - or any other - since I was in an airplane at the time, but this takes a pretty dim view on Beckham's future with the England NT.

Of course he was playing great when he was there. And because of that, they were a worse team when he left. We're agreeing on that. But just like he was not the only reason they were winning, he was not the only reason they were losing when he left, that's what I'm saying.

Anyway, I don't even know if we agree about his quality in the first place. biggrin.gif i think he is/used to be a very good player but I do not consider him among the best of his generation. Like we've said many times before, these thing are subjective...

I do agree with you about Scholes, Keane, Giggs being better at their position than Becks.

He was probably about the best player for England, which doesn't say that much. But you could tell he was really pushing himself very hard just to be on par with the rest of the team. I don't see him picking up many more caps. They will probably pick him for a few friendlies, I think he only needs 9 more caps to become our highest ever capped outfield player.

I don't get your point? a) Backs left and didn't do much at Real, but ManU did much after him. They stayed top, and nowdays are first in EPL and CL contenders.
cool.gif It's not really up to how much you win. It's up to how you play and some other things as well. Keane, Giggs and Scholes are and were better then Beckham IMO. Their effort raised Becks to a new level. Did he lived up to that level? No, I think not. He failed with Real, he failed with England. He was a poor captain for England IMO. If we compare Becks and the other three guys, they all are underestimated. He had the luck to be the one to pick up the fame. And he had the pretty look (I wouldn't be the one to know, I heard so.. unsure.gif ) that made everyone mark him. Soon it all stopped. His hair went ridiculous, his statements and stroys even more, but above all his displays.

Was Becks a good RM? No question. Was he one of the world's greatest? For England yes. And he was an icon. Something England yearned for decades.

Posted by: KillerMax Mar 27 2008, 09:14 PM

Beckham has a better goalscoring ratio and assist ratio(by far) than all those other players mentioned. He was the superstar of the team when he played for manchester and it wasn't only because of his looks, although that did help. People who dislike him or disrespect him are jealous of him pure and simple.

Pirlo is having an stinker of a season with us and he was also very bad last year, overall, but that doesn't mean he is not a world class player, because he has proven himself. So did Beckham at Manchester.
