I don't think our (meaning people who never historically faced questions of race and racism) stances on racism matters. I've never experienced racism personally, some discrimination perhaps, so I don't find myself called upon when such questions pop up. I think it would be wiser to hold back.

Mine could, as I'm technically a minority who grew up abused based on it. But it doesn't alter my stance that people are just too sensitive now.

I used to use soccerpulse for a lot of football videos, was a shame when it went down, thanks for posting about this new one.

QUOTE (Danny @ Jun 30 2014, 03:13 PM) *
My questioning Pato and Suarez' psychological stability was offensive, lobster is apparently offensive, garlic is offensive to Koreans now.

I have to admit this world has not adapted well to the varied use of language, and everything and anything that could be deemed derogatory is, whether it really was or not.

PC is excessive, and the world is just too sensitive now.

It is not the words themselves, it is how they are used. It is not about being "PC" (I am not particularly "PC" myself). Perhaps it is easier to understand for those who have been subjected to some form of racism at some time in their lives. Tolerance for racism drops considerably after that experience.

I think most people have though, in one way or another. I went to a high school where there were less than 50% whites. Basically everyone in the entire school was subject to racism, because there were large amounts of whites, blacks and south Asians, you just get over it. There are a few words, such as the N word, that have quite a history to go with it. But saying someone smells of garlic? Come on!

Again, it is not the words themselves, it is the way they are used. My wife is Korean, so I know that "garlic smelling" is a common racial slur used against Koreans. In most cases, Koreans take it in stride. In the specific case, however, it clearly caused Jung-Hwan distress, probably because it was part of a pattern of behavior. As such, it should not be condoned or minimized. AFAIAC, Materazzi is a scumbag and the Perugia owner is a moron.

As I said in the first message, people who say the things are still assholes. Best thing to do is ignore it, if you're going to get offended by such a travial "slur" (of which there are infinite amounts for any kind of race/nationality these days) then you really have to toughen up as a person IMO. People are assholes, that isn't going to change, best thing you can do is not let it get to you.

Again, you have to take it in context. In the case of Jung-Hwan, it was just part of the problem, and probably not the biggest factor.

Racism is only racism imo if it is meant as an attack.

Ahn wasn't simply racially abused, but he was also marginalized by the rest of the group led by Materazzi. So yeah, taken into context as FM! says, it is derogatory.

Currently watching QI and they said that the reason a player gets booked for taking his shirt off after scoring is this: Sponsors complained that when a goal is scored and the camera zooms in on a player, if he's not wearing his shirt, the sponsor can't be seen.

I never knew that. SO ridiculous!

That's a fair complaint but booking a player for it is not.

I don't buy it. International shirts don't have sponsor names on them, and still players get booked.
