AC Milan - Milanfan.com _ Past Players _ Inzaghi

Last match, I can't believe that he is a man with 2-year-injury. He plays like as he did 2 years ago.

During years, I always think Sheva - Pippo is the best choice for us ... One is around, attracts defenders, one hides and suddenly appears then kills ...

Posted by: Brian Birkin Oct 24 2005, 07:04 PM

You are right, remember the 02-03 CL season. pippo scored great goals and he was working well with sheva. I wanna see that again.

honestly, between Chelski and Arsenal, so long as they don't become a problem for Milan, I won't hate them. I promise. biggrin.gif They can grab as many EPL titles as they want to.

It will change if they want to be a problem for Milan. mad.gif We met Arsenal but we beat them in 1994-95 and won the Super Cup; we met Chelsea in group stage of CL a few years back when we were miserable. we were eliminated but that was hardly Chelsea's fault. I blame it on Galatasaray. mad.gif The same goes to Man. U, as they rarely became a problem for Milan since I watched. smile.gif

So far, Liverpool is the only team I hate in England. mad.gif

Don't support any in EPL, although I have a couple of local teams in the League 2 (3 leagues down from the Premiership) in Torquay United because I was born there and Cheltenham Town because atm that is my local team.

But diving cannot be justified at all, it might look interesting to someone watching the game but when someone cries 'foul' for a tackle you didn't make, it really boils you up! devilsmiley.gif devilsmiley.gif

Posted by: milan00047 Apr 12 2006, 06:57 AM

Inzaghi is dangerous because in the first few minutes he gets in between defenders and give them a scare. or to put it he softens up the defence for seedorf and serginho to put in crosses as well as create as much as from open play thru Sheva and KAka
he also earns you penalties with his soft dives.
he is definnitely better than Eto'o drogba and Nistelrooy as an out and out striker.

Well that seems to be the case in modern football but he's the only one I've seen in suck kind of video. But the reason I don't like Inzaghi is not this... it's because he has no style, no class, no finesse!! Which is all that got me into Milan in the first place...

Don't misunderstand me, I'm thankful for what he's done for Milan and I know we could have been eliminated (more than) a couple of times if it wasn't for him but you know I just don't like what I see... It's maybe because he always reminded me of Giuve...

Inzaghi’s pact with the Diavoli

Filippo Inzaghi has dismissed reports suggesting he might be close to leaving Milan. “I hope to end my career here.”

The striker has struggled for form so far despite his bright start to the campaign and has recently been paired with a summer move.

Roma have been heavily linked with a bid for the veteran hitman, but Superpippo was eager to deny he is interested in a change of club.

“I have never had any negative thoughts, I think that the relationship with Milan is destined to last because there is something special between us,” Inzaghi told Italia 7 Gold.

“The goals and the victories are unique and are something that cannot be erased,” added the former Juventino.

“I still feel the trust of the entire environment, the club, the Coach and all the supporters. I really hope I can continue playing here until the end of my career,” concluded the 33-year-old.

Inzaghi was reportedly unhappy with Ronaldo’s arrival in January, as he considered the ex-Inter ace as a competitor for a spot in the first team.

However, the World Cup winner then declared that he was glad to welcome such an important player, even if that meant that he wouldn’t be able to play every match.

Inzaghi: It was a dream

Milan hero Filippo Inzaghi insists he fulfilled a childhood dream by scoring a brace in the Champions League Final.

The striker netted a decisive double in the 2-1 win over Liverpool this week and he admits his Athens memories will last forever.

“You dream about scoring two goals in a Final when you’re a kid,” said the 2006 World Cup winner.

“The goals I scored on Wednesday were the most important of my whole career,” continued Super Pippo.

“It was an unforgettable match. Nights like these remain with you for your entire life
and it is clear that two goals in the Final leave you with few words to say.”

Inzaghi is also delighted that this week’s victory has helped to erase the ghosts of Istanbul in 2005, a game he missed.

“That was terrible for me,” he added. “I was in the stands and I hoped I would one day face Liverpool again – in order to help my team take revenge.

“These are the stories that make football a great sport.”

Inzaghi, who will turn 34 in August, is aware that playing time might be restricted in the future at the San Siro, but he still wants to contribute when asked.

“I will have to play less and that is only right,” he added. “I will try to do my best when I am fielded and will play only when I am fit to do so.
“I would like to reach the landmark of 100 goals for Milan,” explained the striker, who has scored 82 times so far. “Nevertheless, I plan on ending my career here – if the club agrees.”

Milan returned to Italy yesterday afternoon and won the plaudits on their fans on an open-top bus ride through the streets of Italy’s fashion capital last night.

They will parade the trophy yet again at the San Siro this evening from 21.00 hours local time. Entry will be free to season tickets holders. Other fans will be charged just one euro.

That ball was destined to hit Inzaghi, anyone else and it wouldnt have happened

If gila was there for the second goal, he probably would have hit the post or something tongue.gif

Nah, seriously, he lacks european experience which he is gaining now, plus he should now start to be consistent, seeing as he might get a proper break now along with the rest of the squad. he has also been extremely unlucky on many occasions

^^ What he said.

It's much harder to play in Europe than in your own league. Pippo has tons of experience, which helps him a great deal. Gila will eventually gain that experience and be able to play at a higher level. Don't worry, he'll come good for us. wink.gif

PIPPO ALWAYS SUPER

Pippo Inzagi has been looking back over the season that ended in triumph in Athens and ahead to the new campaign

Pippo Inzaghi was a guest on Milan Channel where he looked back at what was a wonderful season for the striker. He said: 'The night in Athens was magical, scoring twice. I still can't believe it happened. I am going to stay in Italy for my vacation, to be close to everyone, I like the affection from the people. I will be with my family and relax for a bit in the sun.'

As for his contract. 'I feel part of the family and I want to stay. I feel great here and it's a pity that the season is over. I have to thank Berlusconi and Galliani for extending my deal to 2011 before I left for Antwerp. This is the difference with Milan compared to other clubs. I don't think anyone else would have done that before an operation.'

Pippo is now on 284 goals and is setting his sights on 300: 'I want to reach this target but winning trophies with the team is more important.' He was also the first back last summer when Milan had to play the Champions League preliminary round: 'I was in Sardinia, I had just arrived so I got on the first plane back. We knew it wasn't right to have to play it and the first thing I thought was that I would be playing on my birthday (August 9).'

It all ended well in Athens where Pippo scored twice against Liverpool: 'The first was instinctive, it's all you could do in a position like that. I had done it before in the derby. Kakà did well for the second goal. The goalkeeper Reina did well to wait until the last moment and it was lucky the ball went under him. However, once I had gone wide and shot then I knew I had scored.'

President Berlusconi predicted the forward would score both in Munich and Athens: 'He has always had faith in me. He called me before both games to ask me to score two.' As for the national side: 'It's great to be back, we are all together and working alongside the coach.'

Looking ahead to next season: 'The club have done well. The team does not need changing. Then, if a few top players arrive that will help the side. The Italian and foreign players intergrate well. The there are players like Maldini and Costacurta who show everyone how to behave, both at Milanello and on the pitch.'

And what Gilardino has had to say: 'Alberto is young and needs our help. He's a great player and great friend. I think he can be a Milan striker for the next 10 years. He's well liked in the dressing room and this is important.'

Pippo is looking forward to playing in the Club World Cup: 'I am looking forward to going back and we really want to win it but it's one thing at a time and first we have the European Super Cup. We have five objectives we want to reach.'

On other themes: 'Maldini should win the Golden Ball for his career and Kakà for what he has done this season. I am pleased Ancelotti has renewed his contract. It wasn't easy for him to make the decision over the strikers for the final in Athens. The coach had to look at the moment not the past.'

A final word for the fans: 'I want to thank them. They have always remained close to me, not just in Athens but through the difficult times.'

This is a great example of how players are treated at Milan. This is one of the reasons why Milan under Silvio Berlusconi will remain on top. The serenity and family like atmosphere at Milan is what keeps the team in contention and a sense of responsibility towards AC Milan. I have never heard of a player that leaves Milan on bad terms and if that happens then he would regret it and still feel a sense of belonging to Milan. Look at Rivaldo, he played for us 2 seasons at best, but he was there in Athena supporting the side. Shevchenko, we all know that he has regretted moving to Chelsea. Rui Costa, he still feels that he is attached to Milan, you could sense it in the letter he wrote to the club.

Inzaghi's favourite year

Pippo Inzaghi looks back at the greatest 12 months of his career, but after the World Cup and Champions League he wants more with Milan.

“In the last year I have lived through something extraordinary,” said the striker. “To win the World Cup and Champions League is the dream of any player from when he first starts kicking a ball.”

Although he only scored one goal in the Germany 2006 tournament – in the only game he played in – SuperPippo was the decider with a brace in the 2-1 Athens victory over Liverpool.

“I still can’t quite believe what happened. This is why I often rewatch the game with Liverpool so I can confirm to myself it was all real.”

He’s not done yet, though, as the ambitious hitman who will turn 34 in August already has his sights set on more silverware.

“We have now created a magical atmosphere at Milan. It’s fairly unique and that is why it’s no coincidence we have played three Champions League Finals in five years.

“I am on holiday, but already thinking ahead to the first game at San Siro. It will be so wonderful. We have to focus on a good start in Serie A and winning the European Super Cup.”

The Rossoneri will take on UEFA Cup winners Sevilla in Monaco on August 31.

That form earned him a recall to the Azzurri squad under Coach Roberto Donadoni and praise for his commitment to the international cause.

“I really care about wearing the Italy jersey and if I am fit then I am more than happy to attend. I have a clear and wonderful rapport with Donadoni, who had already told me of his respect before the Final in Athens.”

He made an impressive comeback in the two Euro 2008 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

“I found a compact and united squad,” continued Inzaghi. “I think that the group, friendship, respect and the ability to accept very difficult decisions made by the Coach are the key to successes like the ones we had in Berlin and for Milan in Athens.”

Italy relying on 'immortal' Inzaghi
/ Associated Press
Posted: 1 hour ago

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti calls Filippo Inzaghi "immortal."

With Luca Toni injured and Francesco Totti retired from international play at the ripe old age of 30, Inzaghi is expected to lead Italy's attack against France on Saturday in European Championship qualifying.

At 34 - an age when other forwards can retire - Inzaghi is still beating the offside trap and darting past defenders 10 years his junior.

He scored both goals when Milan defeated Liverpool 2-1 in May to win the Champions League and got the equalizer last week as Milan went on to beat Sevilla 3-1 in the European Super Cup.

"It's true," Inzaghi said. "I'm 34 but it's actually now that I'm reaping in the biggest satisfactions and debunking the myth which says a forward at this age isn't productive anymore."

Inzaghi has no intention to stop.

"When I hear the national anthem it makes me shiver," Inzaghi said. "I would never know how to say no to the national team. I think it would be better if (the team or federation) stopped me."

The last time Inzaghi appeared for Italy at Milan's San Siro stadium - the site of Saturday's game and the same arena where he plays for his club - he scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Wales. That win came when Italy was struggling to qualify for the 2004 European Championship.

Italy is not struggling this time around - having won five straight qualifiers - but the Azzurri do need a win to avoid complications in its final four qualifiers for Euro 2008.

France leads Group B with 18 points. Italy is next with 16 points, followed by Scotland with 15 and Ukraine - Italy's opponent four days after the France match - with 12.

"You can be sure the impact of San Siro will be felt," Inzaghi said. "I know how much the fans can count for."

Inzaghi has scored 25 goals in 56 appearances for Italy and 59 in European club play with Milan, third all time behind Gerd Mueller (69) and Andriy Shevchenko (60).

Inzaghi thrives in big pressure situations, while his 25-year-old teammate at Milan, Alberto Gilardino, appears to struggle.

Gilardino, out of form, wasn't called up by Italy coach Roberto Donadoni.

"It's a psychological problem with Gilardino," Donadoni said.

Inzaghi was hesitant to speak about Gilardino.

"Leave him in peace," he said. "He's the future of Italian soccer, the next 10 years of Italian soccer. You'll see."

To tell you the truth this is the main reason I don't want him to leave. I know if Gila leaves, he's gonna strike gold somewhere and we'd be left with sh!t in our face. Something about this guy, that just tells me to be patient, there's something there underneath the surface waiting to explode.

Inzaghi: Don’t Retire Number Nine Shirt

Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi has insisted that his number nine shirt should not be retired when he finally decides to hang up his boots.

The ex-Juventus man is one of the most prolific goalscorers of all time and only German legend Gerd Muller has scored more goals in European competition than Inzaghi.

Superpippo was once again on target during Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Benfica and his heroics since joining Milan in 2001 have led to many Rossoneri supporters calling for his number nine shirt to be retired once Inzaghi ends his career.

“The number nine shirt cannot be withdrawn once I finish,” Inzaghi said modestly. “This honour was not granted to the great Marco Van Basten who also wore the number nine shirt so it cannot be expected to be granted to me.”

Current Dutch national Coach Van Basten played for Milan between 1987 and 1993 and scored a stunning 128 goals in 147 appearances for the Rossoneri.

Inzaghi is someway behind that total but his two match-winning goals in the Champions League final victory over Liverpool last May has sewn his status as a Milan legend. When the 34-year-old does finally retire, he will be remembered as one of the greatest goalscorers Italy has ever produced

They wasn't going to, but it's nice for him to say that.

With all the amazing players we had over the years, to have your name retired you have to be truly unique. Franco and Paolo are of course fall into this category and set the bar very high.

A nice piece by Gabriele Marcotti in yesterday's Sunday Herald (http://www.sundayherald.com/sport/shfootball/display.var.1724180.0.peoples_poacher.php)

People's Poacher

FLASHBACK TO Athens and the Champions League final last May. AC Milan have just won their eighth European crown and Pippo Inzaghi is the man of the hour, having scored both goals in the final. Most of the players have retreated to the centre circle to celebrate.

Inzaghi lingers by himself in the penalty box. He spots Massimo Ambrosini jogging back up the pitch with the match ball and waves his arms frantically. Ambrosini hits a 30-yard pass in Inzaghi's direction. Super Pippo takes off, limbs pumping furiously. Nobody is near him, no opponents, no team-mates and, of course, no goalkeeper. He meets the ball just outside the six yard box and sidefoots it just past the far post. Ambrosini shakes his head.

After the game, the midfielder would say of Inzaghi's post-final whistle miss: "I don't know what's more unusual. The fact that he insisted on trying to shoot the ball into an empty goal from five metres out or the fact that he missed. But that's Pippo."

Indeed, the above anecdote sums up both sides of the Inzaghi coin. The visceral need to score, even at the most absurd times - like, say, minutes after winning the biggest prize in club football - and the capacity for spectacular misses.

Which, in some ways, is rather unfair. The Milan striker, who visits Celtic Park on Wednesday, is something of a contradiction. He's neither physically strong nor particularly technically gifted. His one physical gift - quickness - tends to stand out, but largely because the other facets of his athletic ability are so pedestrian.

Indeed, Inzaghi is not especially fast either. When the club did their pre-season fitness tests, he turned out to be slower over 40 metres than all but one other striker or defender, including 39-year-old Paolo Maldini, 36-year-old Serginho and 37-year-old Cafu.

And that may explain why some of the finest minds in the game have consistently rubbished his contributions. Sir Alex Ferguson famously said that "he was born offside". Johan Cruyff went even further: "Look, the thing about Inzaghi is that he can't actually play football at all. He is just always in the right position."

If that's the case, then perhaps no player in the history of the game has maximised his limited skills as well as Inzaghi. Just look at the numbers.

No current player has scored more goals in European club competition than Inzaghi. Indeed, he needs another nine to join Gerd Muller at the top of the all-time list. He has tallied more than 200 goals in Serie A, Coppa Italia and European competition and it's safe to say this total would be higher if he had not been slowed by injuries over the past four seasons - since 2003 he averaged a paltry 14 Serie A starts a year for Milan. He has 25 goals and 57 caps for Italy, despite being part of a golden generation of Italian strikers which includes the likes of Christian Vieri, Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero.

And yet when you watch him play, especially in person, something doesn't look quite right. Part of it is his build. Thin and spindly, with limbs that seemingly move independently of the rest of his body, he just doesn't look like a modern professional footballer. He looks more like the runt of the litter.

His movements on the pitch reflect this. Where great players make difficult things look easy, he does the opposite. His actions are exaggerated and, often uncoordinated, as if he just barely manages to keep things together. Not coincidentally, the commentator for Milan Channel - the club's official TV station - who has a nickname for each player, calls him "High Anxiety", after the Mel Brooks film.

He looks like a hyperactive 12-year-old who hasn't taken his Ritalin. While he has mellowed compared to years past - thanks, in part, to yoga - he remains a bundle of nervous energy.

For a long-time, Inzaghi was under-appreciated in Italy and, in many ways, he still is. When he joined Juventus in 1997 to team up with Del Piero and Zinedine Zidane in a memorable front three, many saw it as heresy, like forcing Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to perform with a pimply teenager who just got his guitar out of the box. Yet, 87 goals in all competitions in four years tell their own story.

Still, when Juventus signed David Trezeguet in 2000, it became clear that Inzaghi, for all his goals, was surplus to requirement. Thus came his move to Milan, a shift greeted with scepticism at first. Again, he did not seem to fit the Rossoneri brand and the fact he came from Juventus meant he had to win over the fans. He promptly did, especially in his second year, when he notched 30 goals in all competitions and was the Champions League top scorer.

He still doesn't really fit into Milan's ethos and their silky, short-passing game which demands technique, creativity and selflessness. Inzaghi's selflessness manifests itself in his continuous, and often thankless, runs into space - the problem, as one Serie A commentator put it, is that: "Inzaghi may work hard to get open, but, when he does, you know if you give him the ball, you won't get it back: he'll either score, blast it into the stands or lose it."

But then, you always return to the numbers. Not only does he score often, he scores in big matches. Perhaps the people we should be celebrating are guys like him, rather than the Kakas and Ronaldinhos of this world. As great as those guys are, they were born with tremendous athletic and technical gifts. Inzaghi wasn't. He is one of us, the masses who are neither fast, nor strong, nor skillful nor athletic. His success comes through hard work and the ability to learn where the ball is going to be and to make sure he's there to meet it.

The father of a young footballer most likely can't, in good conscience, tell him one day he'll grow up to be like Ronaldinho. But he can tell him that, with enough character, workrate and single-mindedness, one day he can be like Inzaghi. Which is no bad thing.

Inzaghi: I Want The Scudetto

Prolific Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi was delighted with his record-equalling two-goal salvo last night and has denied that him and his team-mates only care about the Champions League.

The veteran's brace against Shakhtar Donetsk made him the joint top-scorer in European club football history alongside German great Gerd Muller.

Inzaghi's form, much like the rest of the Milan team, has been far more impressive in Europe this season than it has been in Serie A.

SuperPippo is yet to score in the Italian championship this campaign, while Milan are 11 points behind leaders Inter and are sitting in a disappointing 9th place in the standings.

This has led many to accuse the Rossoneri of only being interested in doing well in the Champions League and of disregarding Serie A.

"I am really happy to have scored these two goals," said Inzaghi. "Now I hope to begin to start scoring in the championship as well.

"The Champions League has a special glamour about it, but it is wrong not to say that for this reason we underestimate the championship. I personally want to win the Scudetto."

Inzaghi will be hoping to notch up his first league goal since January on Sunday as Milan make the short trip to Bergamo to face Atalanta.

At least there will also be Pato so if Pippo won't be ready by the next game we'll have more of a choice.

R9 also finally training.

What's the odds of finally having all 4 fit strikers in the same squad?

Probably just like the odds that we'll buy more then 1 player in this t-period..

I think next year should be his last year. I love Inzaghi, but it's pretty ridiculous to have a striker that can hardly play 15 full games a season.

He could retire at the end of this season. I would if I were him! he will be almost 36.. [I mean 35!] by that time for god's sake!! he should pave the way for youngsters! and I don't think there's anything left he'd want to win...

He's 34, from what I've heard. So is Dida. Ronaldo, Sheva and Totti are 31. But yeah, it's about time I guess, for Inzaghi. He's won everything there is to win (World Cup, European Cup, Serie A, and countless other titles). Time to get married, have a settled life, and start working on a Pippo v2. smile.gif

1.Pippo is a legend, and a good bloke. Not the kind to go around over estimating his abilities and throwing attitudes. Like Cafu, he can stay as long as he wants.

2. He's a playboy. He's had too many relationships...never really found the 'right' person I guess. Too much in love with banging in goals rather than uhm...just banging.. unsure.gif biggrin.gif

i wish i could agree with you, but as zd mentioned 2 league goals in 12 months isnt exactly impressive...

Pippo on Controcampo last night (translation courtesy of acmilan.com's english page):

"Our primary objective was to reach the fourth place, then clearly we wanted to give our fans a great match against a special opponent. We played very well, Inter were mentally in a better position than us, the pressure was all on us, Milan were the ones with everything to lose. In any case I'm already looking forward, on Sunday at Naples we are playing for the Champions League."

"I must be infinitely grateful to my team mates, this Milan exalts my characteristics and plays to perfection for a striker. There are no problems with the club, Adriano Galliani has given me the privilege to decide when and how to leave this club, it's a possibility that's given to few people and it's worth more than a contract extension."

Italy profit from Inzaghi's late bloom

Filippo Inzaghi's dramatic return to goalscoring form means Alessandro Del Piero is no longer the only old hand gunning for a place in Italy's UEFA EURO 2008â„¢ squad.

Remarkable run
Injuries have restricted Inzaghi to just 12 league starts for AC Milan this term, but the evergreen 34-year-old may have timed his latest purple patch to perfection as far as Italy coach Roberto Donadoni is concerned. Inzaghi's crucial goal in Sunday's 2-1 win over FC Internazionale Milano extended his remarkable run to nine goals in his last five matches – sending a timely message to the Azzurri coach. "Donadoni already knows me well," Inzaghi said. "It's up to him to decide if I would be useful to the squad or not."

'Excellent form'
Inzaghi's 99th goal for the Rossoneri helped the club overtake ACF Fiorentina in Serie A, moving into fourth place and the final UEFA Champions League position, as well demonstrating his undiminished ability to score against top-level opponents. The former Juventus man found the net three times in the latest qualifying campaign and is desperate to show off his nose for goal in Austria and Switzerland. "I'm not saying I should be selected just because I've scored a few goals recently, but I was already part of the qualifying campaign," Inzaghi said. "I've had some physical problems this season but my current form is excellent. I'd really love to get the chance to score more goals for my country."

Experience
Luca Toni nevertheless remains the favourite to lead the Italy attack in Donadoni's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with Genoa CFC's Marco Borriello – the joint-leading scorer in Serie A with 19 goals – regarded by many as ideal back-up for the FC Bayern München striker. But like Del Piero, whose 18 league goals and terrific form with Juventus has significantly boosted his chances, Inzaghi knows his wealth of experience may work in his favour. And on current form, Donadoni might find it difficult to overlook one of the game's great poachers.

WOuld be the perfect end for his international career. Forza Pippo!

Posted by: Tennie May 21 2008, 12:33 AM

So Donadoni didn't call Pippo up for the Euros. I think it's a mistake.

Thing is, the U23s are short of strikers -- Pozzi's still recovering from knee surgery, Acquafresca's out with injury, etc etc. So there may be a need for a striker for the Olympics.

Anyone think there's a chance Casiraghi'd call Pippo up as one of the 3 permitted over-23s for the Italian Olympic team?

Well there are, sort of, two Pippos. biggrin.gif Pippo Jr. who goes by the name of Simone Inzaghi. He's no way near our number 9 level, but I heard Jaap Stam say that the Inzaghi brothers were the worse players he's ever been on a pitch with. Something like that.

Oh, Goofy is called Goofy, of course. He is the most lethal in box striker, when on form. So give him time to get back, and we will see what he can do in the big games wink.gif

EDIT: for got to add this part tongue.gif - There are news on his medical situations, but he has never been on the news a lot even before. I guess it is just that there is so much to choose from upfront, that he is no longer in the center of our attention. But make no mistake, a Shevchenko - Inzaghi partnership at some point in the season will be one of the highlights of the season for me cool.gif

Hey Inzaghi , why don't you drop your shooting boot for pato to come and take over from you.

Inzaghi To Sign Contract Extension - Report

Milan goal machine Filippo Inzaghi looks poised to extend his Rossoneri adventure for another season, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

Superpippo moved to Milan from Juventus in 2001, after four years spent in Turin, for a fee in the region of €37m.

The lethal marksman’s stint in Italy’s fashion capital has been ravaged by injuries, particularly over the past few seasons, but Pippo has nonetheless contributed a great deal to the Diavoli’s cause, netting 57 goals in Serie A, and scoring a fundamental brace in the 2006-2007 Champions League Final in Athens, that saw the Diavoli lift the prestigious trophy for the seventh time.

The former Parma striker’s deal was set to run out at the end of June 2009, but Inzaghi had always stated his desire to call it a day in a Milan shirt.

And the Italian sports Bible reports today that Vice President Adriano Galliani has offered Pippo a one-year contract extension and, even though he has yet to put pen to paper, the Gazzetta expects the hitman to rubber stamp the deal over the next few weeks.

‘High Tension’ was also part of Marcello Lippi’s side that won the 2006 World Cup, bagging a goal in the third group game against the Czech Republic.

I personally don't see it as a good move for the club. If Milan were to treat him as what he truly is, a bonus striker and squad player rather then an integral part of the team then I would have no problem with Pippo extending his contract. But for Galliani to still think of Pippo as a first team player which is important during the entire season will hold us back both from buying a new younger striker. And when Pippo is fit Carlo will play him ahead of Pato or Boriello. It just doesn't sit well with me.

Not to mention the other old players we have who will expect extensions since Pippo got one. Players like Favalli, Puma and Pippo imo need to move on after this season. Milan need to let go of the past and start moving ahead. There is no use in keeping these players on and paying their wages when they are out injured for more then 3 quarters of the season.

I think Pippo has earned his place in Milan. His game was never based on physical strength nor speed, rather positioning and prowess inside the 18-yard box, and in that sense there is no one better.

I'm not saying that he should go no matter what. I'm saying that he should only stay if the board acknowledg that we still need someone to cover for him next season whether he stays or not. If they choose to acknowledge this I have no problems with Pippo staying but if Pippo stays and there is no one else coming in, it would mean that Pippo is holding us back

He spends 3/4 of the season on the treatment table, someone like him should be counted as a bonus not as a firm regular first 11 player.

That's all I'm saying.

As for Puma and Favalli, I'm dead serious about those 2, they need to leave next summer we shouldn't hold on to dead weight any longer. Get rid of Puma, do anything you can to bring Yoann back. Get rid of Favalli and promote Albertazzi from the youth team, I've seen him play he's really talented and a bright prospect

As for Favalli - he'll leave for good. Emerson is about to extend his contract, but that's okay. He's definetely better than Favalli and has at least won some trophies before coming to Milan.

Favallinho always gives 100% to his potential. FACT. Now don't get me started on what his potential is. tongue.gif That's why I prefer to keep him as first-choice sub. This is something even he knows, unfortunately, as his 8 caps for the Azzuri can testify. What's worse, he took Zamborghini's number shirt 19, which is plain unfair, even though he looks like his brother, he is not, so he should return it.

Besides, you have to type his whole name in Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favalli alone won't get you anywhere. That's one measure of a person's popularity. biggrin.gif Gotta type his whole name, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Favalli, always, which is frankly a waste of keystrokes and precious keyboard time that could be used to slurp some cold slurpee.

I could probably go on, but these are some of the reasons why he doesn't top my list of favorite players, him being an Italian legend and all, he'll always be the twelfth-man. wink.gif Which in a club like us, isn't such a bad thing to be. Do I want to see him in Milan? You bet. Do I want to see him starting every match, when better choices are available? I'll need a rain check on that, one, sorry. Sure he has a couple of good points as well, like the fact that he's from the 80s - that's always fun to know in a man. And the fact that he still has his 'inter.it' profile page on inter's website speaks volumes about his success. Even though he plays for Milan. AC, that is.

Never thought I'd see a pro-Pippo column on Eurosport's English page, but, well, I did. Here it is:

QUOTE
Early Doors has a few guilty secrets. Many of them involve midgets, armed coups in central African nations and enormous quantities of cheese.

But perhaps the most shameful of all is this - ED loves Filippo Inzaghi.

Now 35, Inzaghi is the kind of out-and-out striker that seems to be dying out of the modern game.

He is the opposite of Emile Heskey. He isn't a team player, he doesn't track back, he doesn't hold the ball up and he certainly doesn't put in the hard yards. All he does is score stacks of important goals.

And last night he stuck it to Portsmouth with a sensational stoppage-time effort that scraped a 2-2 draw for Milan.

ED has done a lot of research on Superpippo and has discovered the following:

He spends 31 per cent of his time gesticulating, 24 per cent getting caught offside, 19 per cent rolling on the deck brandishing imaginary yellow cards, 14 per cent clasping his hands together and making a face like a toddler who has just dropped his ice cream on the floor, and the remaining 12 per cent of his time on the pitch is spent scoring goals.

Early Doors spent years despising Inzaghi. It hated the playacting, the whining and the constant irritation of seeing him deliver at crunch time.

It joined in the sniping, nodding sagely when Jaap Stam called him and his brother Simone "diving cheats" and chuckling when Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Filippo Inzaghi was born in an offside position."

Then something strange happened. As Inzaghi continued to defy his critics, scoring goals in the face of constant criticism and derision, Early Doors's hatred turned to grudging respect, then admiration, then full, unsettlingly profound love.

Admittedly, Early Doors has a thing for anti-heroes - Inzaghi joins George W. Bush, William Gallas and Craig Revel-Horwood on ED's list of lovable rogues.

No wonder he feels as though the world is against him - he has scored over 250 goals in his club career and 25 for his country, yet every compliment of him is backhanded.

This zinger from Johan Cruyff summed it up perfectly: "He can't play football at all. He's just always in the right position."

Only six players have scored more in the Champions League: Andriy Shevchenko, Raul, Alfredo Di Stefano, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thierry Henry and Eusebio.

So you can shut your face when Early Doors calls him one of the greatest strikers of all time.

Last night's goal was his 68th in European competition, and was classic Inzaghi.

It was timed to inflict maximum misery on the opposition - an equaliser in the 92nd minute of a game Milan had deservedly trailed 2-0.

There was a whiff of controversy about it, with Inzaghi taking up his customary position nanometres from straying offside.

His first touch was a sublime piece of control; his second was a lucky bobble off his shin; and his third was a little slice of predatory genius, prodding the ball into the bottom-left corner.

He has been doing it since Peter Crouch was in short(er) trousers, and Portsmouth should have known not to give him a yard of space in their box.

Inzaghi celebrated in customary fashion, breaching a lacklustre cordon of stewards to get stuck in with the away support. He went back for more after the game, chucking various items of clothing to his adoring fans.

And that, it seems, is what makes him so good. This was, for Milan, the fabled cold Tuesday night at Rochdale.

An away trip in the UEFA Cup - a competition Milan are mortified to be in - to play a game that was not even shown on Italian TV. Yet Inzaghi celebrated his equaliser like it was the World Cup final.

No less a sage than Silvio Berlusconi, fresh from praising Barack Obama's tan, actually hit the nail on the head in his appraisal of Inzaghi: "Perhaps his touch on the ball isn't very good, but he lives for the goal."

While he appears to embody all the precious, whingeing, cheating values we hate in the modern game, Filippo Inzaghi is a purist's dream. He doesn't care about image, wealth or WAGs. All he cares about is scoring goals.

Here's a rather nice interview with Pippo from acmilan.com's english page:

QUOTE
MILANELLO - Superpippo speaks. On his return from Bremen, in the fireplace room of Milanello, Inzaghi dropped some of the German adrenaline (he scored his 9th goal against a German team with the Milan shirt in European Cups, and the 12th one including his three goals against Hamburger HV with Juventus) and talked about himself and the team: "66 goals in Europe? Yes, it's important but what counted the most was doing well for Milan. It was a long time that I hadn't played from the start and I had prepared well for this, because when you don't play frequently you have to prepare carefully, in a special way. Still last night by the 65th minute I had cramps, but I am happy because I played a good match and I also scored. The goalscoring record in Europe? It will be remembered when I will quit playing, now I enjoy it, especially as an Italian: being there with many champions from other countries, and competing in this classification is very important. Certainly, without the team mates I had in all these years at Milan I wouldn't be here talking about these things. I like to share these joys with them and I am happy I can still experience these important European nights which are full of satisfactions."

"With Milan - Filippo Inzaghi continued to Milan Channel - I reached 105 goals in official games with the Rossoneri shirt. A nice number, but now let's try to go forward, the only disappointment is that I wasn't able to celebrate the 100th goal the right way because it was the match against Udinese last May which, although we won it, did not allow us to qualify for the Champions League, but for me the basis of everything is doing well now, I don't have any pains, I try to give a hand when I can and let's see what happens in the next few games. The derby? I was very disappointed to lose the derby but it happens. Sunday night I was happy because I was doing well and that's the most important thing, then it's clear that the great goal I scored in the second half would have been the cherry on the cake but it was offside, then there was that penalty which unfortunately the referee didn't see, while at the end Julio Cesar made a great save, a save only him and a few other goalkeepers in the world are able to make. In the league we now have to think about finishing in the first three for the qualification to the next Champions League, then we'll see what happens, now let's think about winning on Sunday against Cagliari, a very tough side who are doing very well. The goals conceded? We know very well that we conceded two identical goals between the match with Inter and last night: we have to improve on this aspect. Now let's roll up our sleeves because we have to think about winning on Sunday and then next Thursday to get through in the Uefa Cup."

Pippo's always THE man... devilsmiley.gif

Thanks for posting it Tennie...

Posted by: kurtsimonw Feb 20 2009, 06:17 PM

Thanks Tennie.

It's quite sad that Pippo, the man who won us our most recent European Cup amongst other things, only has 19 pages. Yet Pato, who's only been here 18 onths and done little of note, has over 100!

I agree, it's kind of sad.

Let's not get into these comparisons, shall we? huh.gif Paolo Maldini could have 1 page, and he'll still trump any and every hundred page thread. Same was the case with Ronaldo, as is the case with Dida. It's the small moments that make these players what they are. Beside, intentional or not, we always find ways to segregate and separate our players, from Brazilians to divers, to what not. No offense intended, of course. These things can always wait until they leave the club.

But as long as they play for Milan, wear the red and black, they're a part of the club. No classification needed.

Posted by: Fillipo Simone Feb 20 2009, 07:59 PM

Don't get your point completely. Just wanted to say that I agree with Kurt how funny it is that a Inzaghi-thread is half as "hot" as a Pato thread, when the first spent more then just a few years more then Pato here. No segregation, no classification. Pure facts..

Posted by: Tennie Feb 20 2009, 08:05 PM

Segregation is an emotionally charged word, at least in this country. It sends up as many red flags as calling someone 'racist' does.

I agree with Kurt and Fillipo that it's a bit surprising to see whose threads have lots and lots of pages and whose do not.

Posted by: Zed.D Feb 20 2009, 08:19 PM

Wow, I'm sick of the way Pato's name is brought up in a rather negative way every now and then...

Posted by: Tennie Feb 20 2009, 08:20 PM

Welcome to my world, zeddie. It's done to pretty much every other player on the team on a very regular basis. Pato is hardly being singled out.

Anyway, this is the Pippo thread. Let's talk about him, shall we?

It's never been like this, Tennie. if a player was criticized, it was only based on what he did on the pitch [if you think I'm wrong, I'll be happy if you show me some examples]. but to say it's sad the Pato thread has more pages than the Pippo thread... gee!!

I'll agree with the facts too, but my point actually was more in line of there are big players who don't have as much thread activity as some new ones that have tons of it. That doesn't make them a different/better/worse player than any other Milan players. Simple. Even Paolo and Nesta threads don't have that much activity and they've been here for ages. smile.gif Doesn't make them inferior to Pato (or anybody else) in any way, shape, or form. Same goes for Inzaghi. And for every other Milan player. A big part of Pato's thread is all the transfer blah blah before he signed up.

And just for the record I agree with Kurt too, but maybe it's just me, I just won't worry about such things. I mean, Dida is a wold cup winner and two times CL winner too, by this count his thread has pin-drop silence. laugh.gif What matters is all these player giving their full where it matters. And we as fans should be worried more about that too, rather than competing which player gets more activity or which thread is hot. There are some players who are in the media spotlight comparatively more than others, and this too reflects in a forum sometimes. At the end of the day, all that matters is them being a part of Milan, all being equally important regardless of such small details.

As far as Pippo goes, nothing will change the reality of all the vital goals he scored for the club. This is a FACT.

Posted by: Tennie Feb 20 2009, 08:37 PM

I do think it's sad that there are more pages discussing a 19 year old than the guy who scored both goals in our most recent CL final, yes.

As for Pippo, I'll offer an observation so this post isn't completely off topic.

When he was at Juventus, I couldn't stand him. Not sure how many remember that far back, but the Del Piero-Inzaghi-Zidane trident was pretty effing fearsome. Pippo could score against Milan at will. Needless to say, I've since come to have great affection for him (and I really like the goofy face he makes when he scores).

Funny thing is, the Juve fans I know now despise Pippo because...he scores against them for fun. smile.gif

So it's all a matter of perspective.

Posted by: acid911 Feb 20 2009, 08:44 PM

Let's leave it, guys. Not worth debating this, or fighting over. innocent.gif Dida has 32 replies, while Kalac has 80. Ambrosini our second longest player has 61, with Gattuso at four times 247. At the same time Kaka has 1,150. If we started measuring players and their effectiveness with the amount of hotness or activity they get in an Internet forum, then God have mercy on us.

Posted by: kurtsimonw Feb 20 2009, 08:45 PM

Oh dear, what have I done!?

I didn't mean it in a negative way to Pato, it's just surprising to me that somebody has given some of his best years to the club and done great things here yet doesn't seem to be as talked about as a guy who's played for the club for a year. Nothing against Pato at all, it's not like it's his fault people talk about him alot.

I'm sure it's the same everywhere. I bet the Ibrahimovic thread is bigger than Zanetti's, Ronaldo's than Giggs', etc.

Posted by: Fillipo Simone Feb 20 2009, 08:45 PM

This discussion is utterly sad as well. My god, I'll sure burn in hell for mentioning Pato's name.

I'd appeal we stop here and from now on try read what people actually say and not misquote them.

Good. king.gif I second it. And no, it was not about Pato versus anybody. Like Kurt said it's probably the same everywhere. My humble suggestion was we shouldn't be concerned with it, even though I agreed with Kurt's original comment. Because? It doesn't matter one bit.

And if it does, then by all means start posting anything you can find about a particular player in his thread. Others will (and should) join in the discussion.

Posted by: dst Feb 20 2009, 08:56 PM

Never liked him, never will but I will always be thankful to what he has done for Milan.

Posted by: Tennie Feb 20 2009, 09:01 PM

I don't need to be lectured at to discuss Pippo. smile.gif

Despite the fact that he's not well liked by a number of folks, he's a hero to me because of Athens (and before that Berlin. look back at the match thread; he wasnt even close to fit and yet played and scored).

I've got 2 signed jerseys from the current crop of players. One is Gattuso. The other is Pippo.

@ the sad people

How about stop posting in that 19 year old's thread, and try a little more posting in the Pippo thread? smile.gif

Surprising in the sense that Pippo has been at the club longer, done more for the club, therefore giving us more talking points..

But again, this isn't anything to do with Pato. It just so happened I was reading his thread before I went into Inzaghi's and noticed the difference. I could have said Ronaldinho or Beckham or whoever else, it was just by chance that Pato was the comparison, no other reason.

I'm back in the discussion!

I don't think the number of a certain player thread's pages has anything to do with the amount of the the time that player's been here. Milan fan hasn't been around since 2001, has it?

Talking points? again, I doubt there is much to say/remember about what Pippo did in the 2003/04 season, for example. people tend to forget things as time passes by. just because a certain player's been here for nearly a decade doesn't mean there are more subjects about him to discuss than a newcomer. just my opinion.
