Many people think the CL's where we belong... but I'm going for a surprise win for Shakhtar. unless we have Ronaldo up front, which is not likely to happen.

1-3 away win for Milan
Shakhtar is not an easy opponent, but Milan will be up for it.

A home win or a tie.

Remember there's no Janku and Oddo. and Cafu [who played a full match tonight] will be too exhausted to run after Shakhtar players' @sses over 90 minutes. the same goes for the other players, too.
The two-day interval between these two matches is not sufficient for recovery at all, especially now the players are let down.
We will be lucky to grab a point over there...

I can't see us winning. Eastern European teams are very hard to beat on their own turf. If Celtic can't win there, neither can we. 2-1 to the Ukrainians.

Bonera will play ar RB (better than Cafu in defence), while Sergio at LB.

To see the silver lining in the clouds is very commendable. But f@ck man...ur talking as if the Ukraine is El Dorado.
Shakthar are gonna play physical, they'll play Empoli style. They think they've got the players to beat us down, and kill us on the counter. Group stage match, only the points matter, this is what they'll do.
No yoann for this one. But I would play every one else. Maybe put in a 3-5-2.

Well.
We've got Oddo back, Il Capitano will probably play since he's called up and that brazilian Ari likes so much was called up.
Should be interesting.

Ronaldo is back and that should give us some certainty to score!!!

Wow. O Fenomeno's back! what a fvcking boost!! actually this is the first time this season that our squad looks like a European champions' one! only if Marek was there too
I said Milan will lose because I thought Ronaldo and Oddo wouldn't make this game, but apparently they will. so I'm going for Milan win!

I have faith in Serginho, In fact I prefer a one-legged Sergio to Favalinho at best. but he's 35 (or 36?), he looked too tired last night and I'm afraid he won't be able to give 100% on Tuesday night.

Gattuso-Pirlo-Seedorf

@ Darunia,
That would have been our old formation, if you'd put Cafu instead of Oddo, and Sheva for Ronaldo. Maybe Pippo in Gila's place.
That was my favourite Milan formation under Carletto. Looks like a 4-3-1-2, but often times, when Nesta-Maldini combo were at their brilliant best, it would be this simply devastating 3-4-1-2(Kala instead of Sergio sometimes) *sigh*....man what a game we used to play then!!

Celtic are terrible away from home. So I don't see how that is something we should go on
And FINALLY we have Ronaldo back. But I personally can't see him starting this one. If he's not ready for a full 90 minutes I can see him coming later on into the match especially if we're drawing or losing
I think the most probably formation will be
Oddo--Nesta--Kala--Maldini
----Rino---Pirlo---Ambro----
-------Seedorf--Kaka--------
-------------Gila--------------
Ronaldo to come in for Ambro in the second half and switch to a 4-3-1-2
And it's Gila's turn to score another brace in this game since he seems to be doing it in every other game

Why not bench Kala, let Maldini play where he can give 100% (CB) and appoint Sergio for the left?! it's better that way.

Hypocrits1) who mocked?! we're just worried about how things are going on. from now on, at your command, I won't complain about our results, satisfied?!
2) your position on this issue is not inimitable tbh, it's so easy to sit back, relax and always claim we'll come through these difficult moments. but hey, we people are different from each other. some prefer to show no sign of worries (even if they really are worried) but some people can't. is that a reason for you to call the latter mocking hypocrites?!!!

I agree 100%.
It'd be like losing at home to some 2nd rate team, the fans will boo and jeer at the end of the game. They're not glory hunters, they're showing their frustration. Just as I, zdr, Porty, bigmac and many others do on this forum.
When someone is passionate about something, they can't help but be sad or whatever by something, it doesn't mean they're wrong or horrible people. Some people just show more frustration/anger than others.

Celtic haven't kept a clean sheet on the road for well over a year, if not longer. When Boruc was in the headlines for his Old Firm flap a few weeks ago, fans took the opportunity to roast him for that.

@kurt- I understand what you're saying, maybe it's that some of us come from that place called - 'Been there done that, sh!thole goes far deeper than this!'
It's just irksome how we keep getting on each other's nerves.

Maldini can play LB, sure. I'd rather see him in the center and Kaladze on the left though if we must play that back line (I'd bench Kaladze and play Sergio).
I think we've got on this board a real difference in philosophy and outlook. There are the oldtimers (like me and R7) who have followed Milan for as long as (if not longer than) a good percentage of other posters have been alive. We see things differently than the very enthusiastic young fans do. I think R7 and I would agree that Milan is more than just football. There's a certain class about Milan - even when the team is doing poorly like now - that just is not present at any other team. Milan is also not a team that's going to go for the instant gratification 'we want a title now and we're going to spend a zillion euros to do it' sort of team like Chelsea is. If that's the team you want to follow, then I suggest Milan may not be right for you. Milan takes the long view (ie, PATO). And Milan so far hasn't been proved long in the long view.
That's why it bothers us oldtimers (and makes me want to reach for my fish woobie to hit people with) when there's a constant barrage of team-bashing and general wailing and gnashing of teeth. There's a difference between constructive criticism and 'zomg, they all suck'. The former, I'm all in favor of. The latter - which is all too common right now - I don't bother reading.

It's not being hypocritical.
If we have a bad game, I'm not going to just be "Oh well, you win some, you lose some." To me that's just not passionate, it doesn't even sound like I care. I'm obviously going to be annoted and angry.
When we win, of course I'm going to celebrate and be happy. It's not being a hypocrite, that's football.
And no R7, I'm not accusing you not caring. I think it's clear to us all that you do.

To talk about the game (this IS a match thread), I didn't pick up a whole lot of note in my brief skimming of the news conferences on acmilan.com's italian pages. Carletto /did/ say that he wasn't sure /how long/ Ronie would play though, so that's a hint that he will play some time. Also, the player who spoke along with Carletto was Kaladze. Could be because he used to play in the Ukraine. But usually, the player who does the pregame press conference also starts so....*passes the vodka bottle to dst* looks like Kaladze will be somewhere in defense.

Hi! This is the Shakhtar-Milan match thread! In between the bickering (and yes, I know I'm as bad as anyone else this time) I'd like to discuss the match.
Given what Carletto said in his press conference (http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=55673), I'm going to guess that the lineup will look something like this:
Dida
Oddo Nesta Kaladze/Maldini Kaladze/Serginho
Gattuso Pirlo Ambrosini
Kaka Seedorf
Gilardino
(if Carletto is feeling conservative against a very physical team away)
OR something like this:
Dida
Oddo Nesta Maldini/Kaladze Kaladze/Serginho
Gattuso Pirlo Seedorf
Kaka
Gilardino Ronaldo
(if Carletto is feeling a little adventurous and if Ronnie is somewhere approaching match fit)
I don't think this will be an easy game. Shakhtar are no pushovers and they're very strong at home. I'd prefer a win but I'd be perfectly happy with a draw.

theres that word, "bashing"
Bash: To criticize (another) harshly, accusatorially, and threateningly: "He bashed the . . . government unmercifully over the . . . spy affair" (Lally Weymouth).
hmm lemme see, if pointing out certain flaws, different ways too improve the team is considred bashing then i'm guilty, or maybe your just overly sensitive. after all who was right when some of us saw this coming? i mean it's just great using such strong term freely especially when it's completely unjustified.
Posted by: KillerMax Nov 6 2007, 12:36 AM
Seems like Ronaldo has a lot of desire to play. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone, but he could easily get injured again, which is not reassuring.
And on Gila, I think he is a bit tired. He has been playing a lot lately and he has a tendency to disappear toward the end of every game. I still think Gila - Ronnie can be very useful but the real satisfaction will come after January with Pato and Ronnie playing together. They'll help us tear down defenses especially when you consider we don't have the fastest full backs in the world.
For this game, I want a win, of course. Doesn't matter how long Ronnie plays, as long as he gets more match fit and doesn't get injured. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a moment of brilliant magic.
Posted by: Darunia Nov 6 2007, 01:52 AM
My guess is Gila will start and Ronaldo will be brought on with 30 minutes left... but who knows, maybe R9 from the start

If he really means it, expect a tough game for us.
Shakhtar Boss: We'll Defend Hard Against Milan
Shakhtar Donestk coach Mircea Lucescu has warned fans not to expect any repeat of the 4-1 thriller at the San Siro as his side prepare to welcome AC Milan to Ukraine...
Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has informed AC Milan that his side will defend heavily for the visit of the Italian giants.
"From the outset, we'll be much more careful than we were there," he said.
"We will not attempt to replicate Celtic's approach against the Italians."
Celtic won 2-1 against the Italian cracks at Parkhead, of course, but Lucescu has not promised a similar result for the Shakhtar faithful.
"Both teams will play for victory, but if it's a draw I suppose both sides will be satisfied," he mused.
"We were criticised for not playing defensively in Milan but even at 2-0 down, we tried to show what we've got.
"We're in for a very tough match, but it will be tough for Milan too."
"We never give in. No matter how many players are left – ten, even nine – this team will battle to the last," he added, saluting his troops for their ten-man, 1-0 league win in the weekend derby.
As part of his new defensive philosophy, the former Besiktas coach has told his players to tighten up at dead ball situations.
"The most important thing is for us to avoid conceding goals from free-kicks and corners; I can remember a famous Andrés Palop goal from a corner which stole a victory against Sevilla from us," he bitterly recalled, reflecting on his team's recent UEFA Cup defeat.
Shakhtar sit joint top of Group D with Milan, having six points from a possible nine.

Horsepuckey.
The fish woobie wants to know if this means he has a chance, then.
I just checked the Gazzetta online edition and they don't seem to have a guess at probable lineups.
Goal is predicting the following lineup: Dida; Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, Maldini; Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Kakà , Seedorf; Gilardino
I suspect they may be mostly right, though it may be Pippo instead of Gila. Much as I'd like to see a 4-3-1-2, I think it'll stay a Christmas Tree formation, with Ronaldo coming on partway through the second half.

ANCELOTTI: "We have recovered"
11/6/2007
MILAN - Last night, following the team's training, the coach of Milan spoke to Milan Channel from the Ukrainian training camp: "All of our players have recovered from the match of a few days ago in the league. We must find our pace as soon as possible and the motivations must be at the top, both from the team and individual level. Ronaldo gave us a big help last year when he was at around 50% of his possibilities and therefore he will help us this year too."

We need the CL form Milan (dr jekyll) to beat them in Donetsk (BTW I was born near Donetsk ). The fans are pushing them there and they are playing very tough and confident. Add to that that their have also a good technical abilities and their know that a win today would put them very close to qualify to the 1/8 for the first time ever. Our league form (mr hyde), surely, won't be enough.

I don't like it, but...this is what uefa.com is showing as the official starting lineup:
Dida
Bonera Nesta Kaladze Serginho
Gattuso Pirlo Ambrosini
Seedorf Kaka
Gilardino
Maldini, Oddo, Ronie, Pippo on the bench.

We need Ronaldo to come on in the second half if we want to open them up.
Also the only thing Ambro is doing is fouling, he isn't even covering his flank Seedorf has to keep going back to defend that area and that's where all the crosses are coming infrom

Only chance for us today is through the wings. Sergio is doing allright, Bonera impressed me defensively but he can't attack. So if it stays 0-0 after 70 minutes, Cafu should get in.

Notice how their striker 'Brandao' hits Gattuso in the face (close to the flag, between the throwin and the corner), then while Gattuso is on the ground he kicks the ball on Gattuso and the ball rolls out for a throw in... The f2cker then points to a throw in for his team. (this happens in the 2nd half) ; fair play huh

But well, who could blame them - after all, there is only ONE MILAN!

Yes Forza Milan...we all know that, how about talking some football now??!!!
Posted by: Tennie Nov 7 2007, 03:31 AM
datasport doesn't usually do ratings for CL games but goal.com's italian page has done. (http://www.goal.com/it/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=472089)
Here are mine:
Dida: Good saves. he's got his mojo back. 6.5
Bonera: for someone who's not a natural RB, he did awfully well shutting the offense on his side down. 7
Nesta: Nesta was...his usual self. Very good. 7.
Kaladze: Despite the headbang with Dida, no real mistakes to speak of. Went forward a couple of times. Probably 6 - 6.5.
Serginho: Not a lot of effectiveness on offense and, well, the guy's a winger and not a defender. 5.5.
Gattuso: Snarling and tenacious as usual, but nothing absoulutely stellar. 6.
Pirlo: Beautiful passing and one hell of a good job dispossessing Shakhtar of the ball that led to an assist and Pippo's first goal. 7.
Ambrosini: Usually always somewhere around a 7, but not today. Dumb fouls and just seemed out of his depth. 5.5.
Turtle: Decently well, but not the sparkling performances he's had in the last few games. 6.
Kaka: Kicked to death like a number of other Milan players, but didn't need to retaliate and get that yellow. Nicely taken goal and selfless assist to Pippo for his second. 7.
Gilardino: Just doesn't have the bloody-mindedness for CL play, I think. Couldn't find a way around a very determined Shakhtar defense. 5.5.
Pippo: Involved in all 3 Milan goals. Scored the first after 90 seconds on the pitch, assist on the second, scored the third and tied Gerd Muller's record. Pippo really is an immortal. 8.

Wow, that seemed like a hell of a match. It looked like a repeat of Samp all over again. The rat bastards at FSC don't show Milan's CL replays anymore. I snuck onto the net at work a few times to see what was happening.
Great to see MVPippo again, as he's been waiting to do this all season.
From what I've read on other threads, it was so cold that Dida was trying to stay warm during the match (it must suck to be a GK sometimes), and what happened between him and Kaladze?

THERE'S AN 8-0 IN MILAN'S HISTORY TOO
11/7/2007
MILAN - Liverpool-Besiktas of yesterday night became the record-breaking victory in the modern Champions League, which began in 1992-93. The Anfield Road match beat the previous record, both 7-0 home wins, by Juve against Olympiakos on 10 December 2003 and Arsenal against Slavia Prague on 23 October this year. But the Italian record in the European Cup is held by Milan, who on 12 september 1962 beat Union Luxemburg 8-0.
