OK. 2nd leg is coming. Almost 10 days... your forecasts/predictions.

1-0 to us could be a bigger advantage if the players regain some form and take their chances

1-4

Kind of a boring prediction for this one....Serbian fans... their staduims are like fortresses...it might end up being tricky.
But, I would place a bet for a 0-1 Milan, or a draw... sadly it won't be as exciting as we all want it to be...

2 - 0 for me...

I have a good feeling about this game. It seems like we are going to be ready for it.
Posted by: X-Offender Aug 12 2006, 04:56 AM
I think it's going to be an easy one. Come on, we're Milan and they're what, Red Star? Meh, they were pathetic on wednesday. The only advantage they have is their stadium which is something like San Siro for us. Even though its capacity is 50.000 and San Siro's is 83.000. I'm sure that the two matches for the Herrera trophy will give us the top form we need for this match. Really, it would be a shame if we don't manage to get past a team like Red Star.
Posted by: misha Aug 12 2006, 06:06 AM
Their stadium and fans won't be a threat for us. 1:3 easily

Red Star are certainly going to make it difficult - we can't blame them! I've heard that there is a great atmosphere inside the stadium, but I doubt it will affect our players much as they've played in much worse places
If we can play like we did in the first leg we shouldn't have any problems. I hope Gila will break his CL drought too (how many times did I say that last season? )

i,m worried in second leg milan will lose like in 1999. beside that east europe player (red star) have good strengh, maybe they can make penalties round.

Good point. Since WHEN Barcelona is a great club? Because all this hype about Ronaldinho... ?
They have as CL trophies as Porto or Benfica. Even Benfica has much more finals than them.
In La Liga they've some titles, but not even close to Real Madrid.
Do NOT be confused. There's something called "BIG TEAM" with great players and that... there's another thing called "BIG CLUB" with history and titles.
IE: Chelsea has a big team, but no history.
Milan at the moment is a big team, but always have been a great club. Just like Juventus (for league titles), Real (don't need to explain), Liverpool, Bayern...

We do understand very well, but you also have to understand what is going on with Milan .. We have to Qualify, no matter if its in 'Markana', 'Allenz Arena', 'Bernabeu', 'Camp Nou', 'Old Trafford', etc ..
Milan has no other alternative. Maybe Stella Rossa can live with it if they dont qualify, because they were never the favourites .. But to Milan, the Champions League is a complement.
So even if you field a team full of world class players in your best stadium filled with 200,000 .. Milan will put in it's usual performance and bring back the qualification into the Champions League.
We are not speaking out of arrogance, Milan have always been favourites

Exactly. We nearly beat Barcelona in Kamp Nou last season. Kamp Nou's capacity is 110,000, while Maracana's is 50,000. I think we'll have no problem.

I head today on Studio Sport that Ancelotti is keen on the Xmas tree scheme for this match, with Pirlo in the centre, Gourcuff and Gattuso on the wings, and Kakà + Seedorf supporting Inzaghi. That would be a good idea.

I like that idea and I personally think tha gourcuff would be better in Seedorfs role then in Kaka's he was more effective in that position then when he was the playmaker behind the strikers, it might just only be because he needs to build his body a bit more because he doesn't seem strong enough, I'm sure he will be ready to play Kaka's position better after he has spent the year with Milan working on his physique

Yeah I know I really would like to see Gila play but fact is he isn't ready, he said it himself, and since pippo is putting in the goals he probably will get the nod before Gila if we play with only one striker

Xmas tree is a must for this game. We'll be able to take the sting out of the game and play at our own tempo. I'd prefer Pippo to lead the attack with Gila replacing him later in the game.

Totally right, we would have more balance in the midfield and we won't let them control the game.
I wish we still had stam, he would have been able to take care of Zigic much more easier then Simic, he was having trouble with him when high balls came in.
And Pippo should definately start in this, and with Gila replacing him so we could keep their defence on their toes with our striker not getting tired and constantly moving and treathening to score.
Posted by: m1ke Aug 18 2006, 01:04 AM
I still see Gallas as an ideal replacement for Stam - and he's said that he still wants to leave Chelsea. I hope Braida can make it happen.

I don't like the Xmas tree tactic... and Don Silvio will never allow Carletto to play with only 1 foward.
But, for this match, looking at our options... it's the best tactic we can use.

I don't think Simic will play in this match. We have Bonera available and maybe Nesta can recover. So I guess our defence should look something like this:
Cafu-----Bonera (Nesta)-----Costacurta-----Serghino
But maybe I'm wrong and Ancelotti will play with the same defence as in the first match.

This game should finish in our favour .. As past games have proven, Milan always make it through in the decisive games.
About the tactics; X-tree or two strikers, really doesnt matter as long as we score one goal .. Then all my worries will be over.
I hope Nesta and Kaladze recover in time .. cz I dont think Simic is up for it, at the San Siro he was lucky, but I don't know .. I have my doubts about him

Carlo has played the xmas tree formation on many occasions before, I'm sure Silvio won't say anything if he plays it for another game.
I think our best formation for this match should be
Cafu--Bonera--Billy--Serginho
----Gattuso--Pirlo--Gourcuff---
---------Kaka--Seedorf---------
--------------Pippo---------------
If we are ahead bring in Gila, if we are desperate for a goal let Pippo stay on the field I'm sure he could steele one at death.
Unless the Sobis deal goes through and he would be ready to play (which is highly unlikely) then the xmas tree formation is our only option, if Sobis would be ours and ready to play then definately put the 2 strikers upfront.

Err, I think that Carlo will put the same formation as he did in the first match. That's what I heard on Milan Channel. The defense will be definitely the same, with Cafu, Simic, Billy and Sergio. The only thing that concerns Ancelotti is if he should play with one or two strikers.

I think Gourcuff is a Carlo favourite and I'm pretty sure that he will start, if not he will still get a good few minutes out there. And personally I think that Gourcuff is more like Pirlo then Kaka, that's why I think he will play there instead of next to Kaka, plus Seedorf is stronger so he can manage that position better then him

When I was watching him play I though he was more the Pirlo type because he likes to steele balls and make intelligent passes.
I know he will most likely develop to be more like Kaka, but since he doesn't seem that strong to handle tough manmarking, I would use him more as a replacement for Pirlo for now, I'm sure he will work on his body strength more
Posted by: dst Aug 20 2006, 03:24 PM
well I regard Kaka's passes quire clever as well ...
Gourcuff is not the long-ball though, he took a nice Kakaish through ball towards Pippo, remember?? But I think he'll defend more than Kaka ... he's ... Karlo???
Posted by: Jack Sparrow Aug 20 2006, 03:26 PM
I haven't seen him play ...but I was inclined to play him alongside Kaka too. But I guess I didn't think about manmarking and all.
So playing Seedorf alongside Kaka...so all the talk about Seedorf slowing down was just B.S huh?
Well I really wouldnt mind X-mas tree, maybe if we go a goal ahead I'd like a 4-4-1-1 with Gila coming in behind Pippo?

I think it will be low scoring, 0-0 more than possible. Either way, I would expect us to win.As long as we keep them out we'll be ok.
Btw, Red Star is Savicevic's old club, what's he upto these days?

Seedorf was never a fast player, I was just saying that since Gourcuff doesn't have the strength to hold that position YET we should switch his and Seedorf's position for now, because Seedorf is stronger and can still play as a playmaker.
If we play a 4-4-1-1, it would have to be either Gila or Pippo upfront with Kaka behind them. Something like this
Cafu'--Simic--Billy--Janku
Foggia--Rino--Pirlo--Sergi
-----------Kaka------------
-------------Gila/Pippo----

I'm pretty sure we will play like this:

Cafu---Simic---Costacurta---Serghino
Gattuso---------Pirlo---------Ambrosini
------------Kakà ---------Seedorf--------
-------------------Inzaghi-----------------

How long did Gourcuff play in the first leg ? I cant remember, but I think Carlo brought him in for 20 mins of the second half. I hope he does play, he needs to get some games under his feet to integrate w/ his team mates. But what I was thinking is that he is still young, when Kaka first came, Carlo wouldn't risk bringing him on unless we had an advantage.
Gourcuff, although young, he's a first team player at Rennes .. But too much rests on this game in particular .. And Gourcuff would be a liability on the field, as he still hasnt been tested under pressure.
I hope he blossoms in Milan, as Kaka did .. But I highly doubt if our new boy will get his chance ..
But wasn't Gourcuff a MDF player .. He is close to Seedorf's position than Kaka .. ?? Anyways, the season is close to start, we'll find out what he really is

Milan name Belgrade party
Milan have named their squad travelling to Belgrade for Tuesday’s Champions League crunch match.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti has called 22 players for the Preliminary Round tie against Red Star at the Marakana Stadium.
Daniele Bonera could make his official debut after missing the first leg due to a ban left over from his time with Parma.
Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini remain sidelined with injury, so 40-year-old Billy Costacurta is again expected to captain the side from central defence.
The Rossoneri have a 1-0 lead from the first leg at San Siro thanks to a goal from Pippo Inzaghi, but Red Star are still in with a shout of Champions League qualification.
The referee has also been assigned for this game. Dane Claus Bo Larsen has already officiated Milan twice in his career, a 2-0 UEFA Cup win over CSKA Sofia in October 2001 and last season’s entertaining 2-2 Champions League draw at Schalke 04.
Milan squad:
Gk: Dida (1), Coppola (78), Kalac (16)
D: Bonera (25), Cafu (2), Costacurta (5), Favalli (19), Jankulovski (18), Serginho (27), Simic (17)
M: Ambrosini (23), Brocchi (32), Foggia (83), Gattuso (8), Gourcuff (20), Kakà (22), Pirlo (21), Seedorf (10)
F: Amoroso (37), Borriello (12), Gilardino (11), Inzaghi (9)

I think Gourcuff is a Carlo favourite and I'm pretty sure that he will start, if not he will still get a good few minutes out there. And personally I think that Gourcuff is more like Pirlo then Kaka, that's why I think he will play there instead of next to Kaka, plus Seedorf is stronger so he can manage that position better then him
If we are to play the x-mas formation, Ambrosini will get the nod over Gourcuff for sure!

And btw Simic can't play on the left, he will partnes Billy in the centre and Serginho will be our LB

I agree with arivanjj. I've read in a lot of places that Carlo wants to play with two strikers. He said Milan is not going there to defend the 1-0 result, but to close the match as quickly as possible.

Who knows, I don't see us scoring goals that quickly with Gila and Pippo, they simply don't work well together. And the xmas tree isn't a defensive formation, it can be very attack minded depending on how you use it.
Besides there are also rumors that Gila could be dropped because he isn't in-form, so thats why I think we will be playing the xmas tree
And Carlo isn't that stupid, he knows that we can't go all out attacking in this game we will be left open and they could strike us on a counter, I think Carlo will play more cautiously then he is letting on.

I think Ambrosini is a MUST in this game. He is a great defensive midfielder and he links up with the attack well. Him and Gattusso could easily stop incoming attacks and contribute to attack as well. Pippo is a great finisher and Kaka could also score so we should be set. I don't think playing Gourcuff from the start is a wise idea. He should come in in the second half.

Yeah, if we play the xmas tree Ambro will definately start, that way Pirlo will be more free also with him and Rino covering for him, ho won't have to worry about any defensive duties.

You know I always liked the xmas tree formation dst and right now with the type of strikers we have we almost have no option but to play it. Just because the formation has only one striker in it doesn't mean it's a defensive one. I wouldn't call a formation that had Kaka, Pirlo and Seedorf in it defensive.

Still, Milan is the favorite. Still, Milan will win. Even with the "Marakana effect" Red Star has no real chances

Great match, one of the best Milans I've ever seen recently. Pirlo man of the match IMO, he was superb. Red Star played like sh!t. No, worse than sh!t. Their goal came from mistake of Billy, he was a bit rusty tonight. Otherwise, our defence did good, very good. The midfield was fantastic and the attack... do I have to say anything? Take that Delija and whoever else, Marakana my @ss, we shut everyone up. Now's time for signings!
QUOTE (dst)
and why is that good??? there shouldn't be any errors against Red Star .. but I guess it's only the second game of the season
Don't forget we were playing with our reserve centrals. With Nesta and Kala there are no mistakes.
Posted by: m1ke Aug 22 2006, 10:09 PM
Good game! I managed to catch a steam. We didn't control the game as much as I would have liked, but we created quite a few chances and played reasonably well.
At least our summer of hell is nearly over - we can now look forward to a signing or two
PS. I thought Billy had a good game overall.
PPS. Well played Red Star - you kept going until the end and it's a shame we can't both be in the competition this year - I thought your fans were great.
Posted by: Warchant Aug 22 2006, 10:11 PM
definately a relief!
now onto getting this summer behind us and finally move onto the 2006/07 campaign!
Posted by: Jack Sparrow Aug 22 2006, 10:11 PM
Ok...about the defense I'll take ur word for it X-Offender. Pirlo really??!!! Oh what a surprise (Hope y'all noticed my avtar)
Man this is really cool...u see I had predicted a 2-1 and Cafu, Seedorf and Pippo rocking.(Plz fill me in on more about our RB ok...how was marcos today?)
So all those voices in my head are doing a good job...and here I was thinking it was my sanity going for a toss coz of the way our mercato was shaping up
Posted by: KillerMax Aug 22 2006, 10:20 PM
Ok, it was a great game overall considering some of our players aren't fit yet and we were missing Nesta, maldini, Kaladze and Bonera through injury.
Dida(6): He had another solid game. I really hope he stays now. I have no idea what's going on about his contract...
Cafu(7): He was fantastic! He stole the show with his sprints down the right flank and he also contributed to defence!
Costacurta(5.5): Costacurta was having another solid game until he made that childish mistake and lost his cool in front of his own goal. But at 40, there is only so much you can do!
Simic(4.5): If it wasn't for all other players who covered for him, we would have been in trouble! I can say with confidence that Simic is an aweful player!
Serginho(5.5): Although he was great in offense, he was terrible defensive-wise. Especially in the 1st half!
Gattuso(6): He had a good game. Good assist. Good defensive work. But he mis-timed some of his passes. I think he could have done better overall if he tried just a little harder.
Pirlo(6.5): He had a very good game. His passes were presice and he controlled the midfield with his intelligent play.
Seedorf(7): What a player Seedorf has become over the years! I mean does he have technique or what? Ball Controll? It was like the ball was glued to his feet! Great game for him! He was everywhere and scored a wonderful goal!
Kaka(6): He had a fairly good game. It's obvious that he is not match-fit yet. But He still ran a lot for the team and except for a few mistakes, he did good.
Inzaghi(6.5): Inzaghi did what he does best and scored a crucial first goal for us. He was involved with every attack and he was as dangerous as ever!
Gilardino(5.5): Gilardino was marked heavily through out the whole match and was fouled too many times. Left and right, he was going down! But he could have still done much better. Just like Kaka, Gila isn't match-fit yet either.
Ancelotti(7): He got us through with that defense, now didn't he?
We are through! now I expect some great signings!

Don't think Serginho can play on the team unless we switch to a 4-5-1 in which case he can play as a proper winger than a LB who forgets his way back.
the thing is he IS back but any defender that NEEDS 3 SECONDS TO GO DOWN AND TACKLE IS SH1T!!!!!!!!!!!

well attacking-wise he was great - till he reached the opposite box where he unleashed a bunch of bad crosses - one of them pinballed and Pippo scored. Defense-wise he was great WHEN he was back but he was late coming back in 4 or 5 occasions two of which could have been goals against a more lethal opponent (mostly everyone we'll face from now on is more lethal than Red Star...).He will be a really great sub!
Review:
F@CK we're celebrating progression into CL ... this is lame!!! F@ck you Meani!!!!!
Anyway, we started off well, Serginho was lame they created some chances from his mistakes, we scored and the game was over; just playing ball possession after that.
Bajevic is a great coach, Red Star will be a good team in two years time but who cares?!!
Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka, Dida, Pippo were great
Cafu, Gattuso decent and the rest were ... yeah ... I won't comment on that.
I have to say I'm harsh though, I love all those guys in that field, don't get me wrong.
Oh and ... see? Boriello can be a very good fourth striker .. off with Amoroso. You saw him how he yelled "WHY WHY WHY" ???
thanks Milan
I expect Oddo to be anounced tomorrow!!!

Ok. I'm gonna give out my ratings.
Dida: 7.5 - Was very solid, and even brave at times, and he couldn't do anything about that goal, so it was a good performance by him, again I'm glad that his nightmarish season has been put behind him.
Cafu': 7 - As someone said before he simply stole the show when he was making his runs, he was getting a bit tired in the end but thats to be expected. Plus he made some great interceptions and saved us from conceading 2 times.
Simic 4.5 - Made some good interceptions, but was making a lot of mistakes too. Simply put, give him to Lazio so we can get Oddo.
Billy: 6 - He was good and solid most of the time but made a crucial mistake that cost us a goal.
Serginho: 5 - Funny how we were discussing him just a few days ago and all the thing that we said wheren't his strong points showed a lot in this game. He was great for the attack as usual, but made some horrible mistakes, if it was a different team we were playing that was more lethal in front of goal we might not have won today because he made at least 3 errors that could have been 3 cheap goals for the other team.
Seedorf: 8 - All I have to say about him is that he had a very impressive game, I think he really is angered by the calciopoli incedent and it shows, he seems more determined then usual, and it's something that I like to see in him. And he scored a great goal.
Pirlo: 7.5 - Another great game by him, he was controlling the midfield and dictated the tempo of the game superbly, glad to see that he has kept his world cup form.
Gattuso: 6 - He started the game a little cagey and was making a few mistakes with his passing in the beginning but once he got into the game he was everywhere and winning a lot of balls back, plus he made a great assist for Pippo.
Kaka: 6.5 - Like Rino he started a bit slowly but once he got into the game he was getting involved a lot and making a lot of runs and passes glad to see him geting back into shape and regeining his form.
Gila: 5.5 - Like pkillermax said, Gila was being very tightly marked (I don't know why since most teams see Pippo as being more of the dangerman in front of goal) and was being fouled a lot. At times he was disappearing a bit but he was holding the ball superbly, did you see that part where there where 3 players sarrounding him and he still managed to keep the ball even when they where pushing him to the ground he was holding it between his legs, I was laughing when I saw that.
Pippo: 7 - Nothing to say about him, he was his usual self.
Ancelloti:7.5 - Managed to get us through with that defense and also in some style.

What I like from all of this points above is Gilardino. Actually I shouldn't like, right? But I like, espacially the fact that he fights for the ball so much. This was his very good quality last year also. He'll score I believe. He still doesn't have Pipo's experience and doesn't realize his chances, but I believe in him. He can make it/

I agree on Seedorf and i think he played perfect
I would give him a 10 and an 8 for Pirlo and Gattuso
They played perfect in miedfield and they have covered all the spaces
They have saved our defence and i think thats why i didnt heard mutch about Zigic in this match
I didnt like Kaka too much
He didnt play at his best but its probably because hes not fit yet
The team has played a good game

To answer what that Red Star fan said (even though it's not directed at him), out first goal was offside yes, but you can't ignore the fact that the ref screwed uys over a couple of times too, Gila was clean through twice and was called offside both times when he wasn't and so was Pippo once. It was bad refereeing that's all no one was being favoured.

Oh, really
cause they are mafiosi. It's more then normal, I'd say it's natural
Think about it. It`s not that natural as it seems

I think that they put up that mafiosi thing because UEFA let us play because of the calciopoli thing, that's why they wrote UEFA in Milan colours as if to say that we bribed them

I know what it means ... and in that instant, because I know what it means I can't get it why you say it shouldn't disturb me??
what do you mean by that???
I mean that it is history, this 'mafioso' ideology .. It is now called organized crime, the word mafia doesn't even hold weight anymore ..
Although organized crime is a reality that is still spreading throughout the world, the word
'mafia' is used just by ignorant people that consider it as bad as it seems. Organized crime is implemented in the big stage of politics, business, etc .. It no longer holds the weight of deeming Italians 'mafioso' ..
Do u get me ? I know your not a kid, and I wasnt implying that.

It wasn't right for them to put up that sign, but then again who cares .. No one is complaining ..
Don't find it logical that we bridded UEFA for anything, seeing as we were proven innocent and it was only the act of a third party that we got the -8 points as punishment ..
.. If a team like Juventus was demoted to Serie B, then Milan could have gone down too if Galliani had been seated right next to Moggi. But if they think that Berlusconi had leverage because of his position (PM @ the time), then so could the Agnelli family seeing as they have been in Italy's elites even before Silvio Berlusconi was born and you can just imagine the amount of leverage that they possess ..
But what can you say, they are just ignorant to the fact that we bring in our results on the pitch

It`s just another cliche, like many of them, but I would suggest to avoid them. Such national characterologies lead one to the other an result much confusion, if not bitterness and hostility. Belive me, it`s my faculty subject...

you obviously are not aware of the reaction Italians had when French (and others) called them mafiosi at the World Cup!!!!!
To call Italians a nation of criminals IS bad!!!!

I am aware of the reaction .. I can see that you are reacting to it .. But believe it or not, its not just Italy that has to go through with this, many countries have organized crime ..
Thus, the term 'mafia' doesn't seem as bad as it did, I took this in Sociology class some 3 yrs ago. The actual word 'mafia' isn't as harsh as it used to be, on contrary it is only the ignorant that use it .. It just doesn't exist in that sense .. Right now, it is much more inbedded to your everyday politics and businesses .. Has nothing to do with a bunch of criminals
Ofcourse you'll be insulted by what it used to mean, but in our day and age; it isn't a reason to sue someone .. Do you get me ?
It is part of history, it's like a dis to a race or religion, like if you say 'Nazi' ..
Only the ignorant use it .. You feel discomforted by it, but it is not a reason to go all out on the person, because bottom line they have no idea what it is they are talking about, basically not worth it, IMHO.
'mafia' .. They were saying that during the final, they must have been reacting to the calciopoli; again ignorance, they don't know the details just went for the simplest explanation.
Posted by: GULLIVER Aug 26 2006, 04:57 PM
Comon, people. calm down. mafiosi or not mafiosi, it really doesn't mean anything right now.
We are passed them. "mafia" had started in italy, so it mostly reffers to them.
Nothing special, calm down.

I absolutely understood what you're saying!!!
BUT don't you get it!!!?????????????????????
Who gives a f@ck what the word means!!!?? It does not matter; Red Star fans wrote "Mafiosi" and even if Italians know the exact f@cking meaning of that word they still know what Red Star fans mean; and that's CRIMINALS!!!!! the exact meaning is just for dictionaries, the way it's used itself is what counts in this instance!!!

dst is very reasonable here...
This problem can be used on two different levels:
First, if we say that the word "mafiosi" is used to describe a national characterology in a insulting way. Then this word would be equal as other words like "nazi" or "nigger". Does words, in this shape are very powerfull, even if we have the context on mind.
Second, if we isolated this word and describe as only insulting, but not on the basis of a national characterology. The this word would not have it`s power and would just present a rude gesture.
I don`t know if were clear about this (argh.., English is just my third option language), but the bottom line is that it depends on our point of view. But dangerous words that are even more powerfull than the persons who speak about them should be let beside. Especially for foreign (in this chase not Italian) people.

Living here in Croatia i`ve become very familiar with our neighbour Red Star fans (delije). Belive me, it`s their way of expression. It`s just a primitive way of thinking that should not be even concerned by us...

well here in Greece fans find it funny to shrill out abuses against players' mothers and stuff every Sunday as well so I'm kinda used to that kind of insulting behaviour ...
I don't hold anything against them delije or who they're called cause that's a common manner nowadays but still what they said is insulting, isn't it!!???

No Red Star fans put up that sign to justify their defeat in the CL 3rd preliminary .. Had we played a team like Arsenal or Liverpool; we wouldnt even be discussing this

Yes it is...but whe should not be insulted. The delije have made the same to every Croatian club they played against. They called us "ustase"(croatian nazis) and demolished the whole city after the game (by the way, they won 3-1..
). So the minuted I saw Milan is gonna play against them I knew it....
