Alex McLeish was ignored by Aston Villa's travelling fans as Darren Bent marked the Scot's first game in charge by setting up a 3-1 win at Walsall.

McLeish's first appearance in front of the Villa supporters before the Asia Cup next week in Hong Kong was seen as an acid test, and the unhappy fans refused to applaud the former Birmingham manager.

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish was delighted with the fans reaction to him as he saw his new side began pre-season with a 3-1 win at Walsall.

The game at the Banks's Stadium was the first game in charge of Villa for the former Birmingham City chief.

And he opened up with a 3-1 win as Darren Bent scored twice.

The England striker turned in a pass from Emile Heskey for Villa's first and netted a second from close range after Richard Dunne headed on a corner, before

Heskey made it 3-0 when Bent hit the post and the rebound fell his way.

Villa were cruising at half-time but could not add any further goals and the final scorer was the home side's George Bowerman.

McLeish, who made the controversial switch from Birmingham last month, gave a debut to goalkeeper Shay Given after his arrival from Manchester City.

But McLeish was delighted with his own welcome, telling Sky Sports News: "I'm sure it was at the back of my mind.

"But you've got to confront it and face whatever comes your way.

"I've had to do a wee bit of that over the last few weeks so it was a nice reception, it was terrific."

Mancini said: "By the time we get to Bendtner, it's going to be obvious we're just taking the piss, but to be honest that's just going to make it even better when we follow it up with a £21m bid for Almunia.

"It's going to be difficult to keep a straight face when Almunia holds up a City shirt up, especially as he will drop it several times - but it'll be totally worth it."
